press release:
West Ham fan jailed and banned from match day trains for three years - Oxford/Reading/Newham
A West Ham supporter who abused passengers and train staff after a 24 hour drinking binge has been jailed for 20 weeks and banned from travelling on match day trains.
Daniel Long (48) of Andromeda Close, Oxford, was sentenced at Reading Magistrates^ Court on Tuesday, 26 February after previously pleading guilty to a public order offence and breach of a suspended sentence.
The court heard how Long was returning home from watching West Ham v Everton in a London pub on Saturday, 22 December on a London Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads train when his torrent of abuse began.
At first, Long, who was already serving a football banning order given to him in December 2011, started verbally abusing passengers around 11.10pm. He then directed his violence towards train staff including the manager.
British Transport Police (BTP▸ ) officers were immediately alerted and met the service at Reading station where Long was arrested and removed from the train.
Long, who breached a suspended sentence order previously placed on him, was jailed for 20 weeks. He was also given an anti-social behaviour order (ASBO) and told not to travel to or through Oxford, Reading, London Paddington and London Marylebone stations on any day that West Ham United or Oxford United are playing a home or away fixture.
PC Lee Carter, the investigating officer, said: ^Long admitted to drinking for 24 hours previous to the incident and his violent outburst caused fear to those on the train. Rail staff should be able to go about their work without fear of being verbally abused and we will continue to work with our industry colleagues to arrest offenders and bring them justice.^
