Not directly related to First Great Western I know, but I thought some would be interested to hear that the last ever coal train from Avonmouth to Didcot Power Station is running today.

6D17 is currently on route to Didcot Power Station as I type.  The end of an era is nigh.

I assume that was this afternoon as there was a coal train waiting to enter/exit when I returned home.

I am surprised they keep so little coal, almost JIT (Just in Time), as Didcot 'A' closes on Friday, and Didcot 'B' is gas only.

Certainly wasn't like that prior to the miners strike.

Can't remember the exact time, but yes, it was this afternoon.  Left Avonmouth around 13:00 I think.

I'm sure they didn't usually, but will have run stocks down to minimise the amount of coal left at closure.

Not the last train, but I was having a sort out tonight and this is 66015 leading a Didcot bound coal train into Challow loop on the 14th February 2013.
