British Railways - Most improved in Europe

The report looks at how the railways in Europe have progressed and improved since the 1990s according to a range of 14 different factors. Britain came top in four of the factors, second and third in another two and fourth in three, coming top overall (see footnote 1)*.

Europe^s other big rail networks - Germany, France and Italy - came 7th, 10th and 23rd respectively.

Sure I'm repeating myself but it's very easy to forget that, when you take our Intercity, commuter, regional and local services as a complete package I think we have one of the best all-round railways in the world. France has the superb TGV^▸ network, but go off the beaten track and you'll often find infrequent, dirty, ancient trains that are covered in graffiti (if there's a train there at all, of course). There are some great deals to be had on the Italian network too, but again trains can be rather infrequent.
