Dear all,

I was wondering if anyone else has noticed the overwhelming smell of diesel fumes which seems to occur on the FGW (First Great Western) class 166 trains since refurbishment? It seems as though diesel fumes are drawn in through the air conditioning system as the smell is more or less uniform throughout the carriages. I find it to be completely unacceptable and wonder what the health implications might be, e.g. carbon monoxide, particulate matter.

I am very much put off travelling on these units until the issue is rectified.

I've got to say I've never noticed this and I travel on 166s fairly regularly.

Unfortunately I have never had the opportunity to travel on a class 166, but however: very welcome to the forum!

Can't say I've noticed any worsening of fumes in the carriages specifically since the refurbishment and I'm on them an awful lot!  The pre-heaters are notoriously smoky and are often the cause of a sudden whiff of fumes when stationary at platforms.

Welcome to the forum merlinswiss.

I haven't travelled on Turbos extensively recently and from what others are saying the problem you describe has not been widely noticed.

However if you do experience it again it might be work making a note of the unit number on the front of the train or the carriage number by the door in case there is a rogue unit running about and no one has reported it because they thought someone else would...
