When an employee performs over and above the norm in exceptional circumstances, they deserve appropriate recompense and it's in the interest of the employer to do that - to retain them or (if the bonus prospect was announced ahead of time) to encourage them through an exceptional period to a successful outcome.
The bonus wasn't 'announced ahead of time', and sadly smacks of 'snouts in the trough'.
And one needs to remember something about that 'successful outcome'... FGW▸ won the franchise by default and NOT on merit.
It would seem (at least to me) there are a lot of facts (re. FGW) you guys are only half aware of...
As I said in my introduction, I work within FGW and will only state the facts as they are on a given topic. If they prove to be a little 'too spicy' for the site, simply let me know and I'll withdraw to allow others to continue with fact-poor speculation.

There are several suggestions as to what the First business paid various people in the first posts of this thread, and I have no confirmation of them. It's up to the individual posters to ensure (and be reponsible) for what they have said; the use of the term "I have heard" is good and valid and clearly indicates something that is short on full fact.
Indeed.
I have only reproduced fact (as stated above) and nothing more.
If others choose to repeat mere ^hearsay^, then a certain suspicion would be more than valid.

Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Major Improvements For Ealing Broadway Station
|
on: August 24, 2007, 21:11:02
|
The Ealing Gazette has given the plans a major thumbs down...
A PLANNED ^400,000 makeover for Ealing Broadway tube has been criticised for ignoring mums and disabled people.
Work revamping the ticket area, toilets and waiting room is scheduled to start next month. Two extra staff will also be added and new information screens installed.
But transport bosses have again ignored calls for access improvements at the station - despite a campaign highlighting the issue by the Gazette last year.
Ealing users group spokesman John Beeston called the works exercise cosmetic.
He called on Transport for London to take control so the station can benefit from investment similar to tranport hubs like Stratford.

I have heard from a reliable source, an EWS▸ driver, that FGW▸ managers have been rewarded for the successful integration of the three franchises into one with a 7% bonus.
In fact, those at the very top of FGW received a full years salary as a 'thank you bonus' for winning the Greater Western franchise.
Not a lot of people know that...

I know someone has posted on this site that FGW▸ asked if they could bid without Wessex but was told all or nothing but can't find that post anywhere. If you are reading do please comment on this.
In truth, First Group had no real interest in acquiring either Wessex or Thames Trains. Unfortunately, it was the politicians who 'bolted together' the three former TOCs▸ into the larger Greater Western franchise, and it was simply a case of "If you don't like it, don't bid for it!"
Lumped with it as they are, it's hardly surprising First are more engrossed in the more lucrative part of the franchise (the former FGW routes and services) than the more 'bread and butter' services provided by the two former TOCs, Wessex and Thames Trains.
I'm also sorry to say, if you use these local commuter services and are currently dissatisfied with the level and quality of service, it's unlikely to improve very much for the remainder of the franchise (five and a half years).

Hi there.
I stumbled upon this board by chance, and thought I'd join to possibly answer some of the questions raised about the trains, service etc people have been posting about.
I am also a member of staff for FGW▸ (LTV▸ ), so I hope to be of use from time to time.
Regards,
Thomas.
