1  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: Mid Cornwall Metro - Newquay, St Austell, Truro & Falmouth on: February 07, 2024, 10:12:40
Is it possible to access platform 3 from the up main line, or can the line to Newquay be accessed from platform 2? It has been a while since I've visited Par station despite having been born in St. Austell. Is it possible to access the down main line from platform 2 or platform 3?

If it was still in existence would the Durston & Athelney Loop Line prevented this occurence?

All the more reason to double the line between Tregoss Moor and St Dennis Junction, which I believe is planned,

Is it not time for these old style arch bridges to be replaced on an ongoing basis throughout the country with their modern precast counterparts?

St. Austell to Newquay via St. Dennis?

All the talk about extending and inserting loops west of Yeovil Junction, why not as far as possible do the job properly and double the line, even as far as Castle Cary. You could even run trains from Paddington to Exeter St. Davids. on this route! More vision is required instead of lengthy reports. Action not words. The report could be split into two, west of Yeovil and east of Yeovil, Time for west of Yeovil to be included with the West of England.

Makes a case for a direct avoiding line between Exeter St Davids and Newton Abbot with no intermediate stations
9  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: Smokey's Picture Quiz (with no pictures!!) on: April 01, 2020, 17:56:00
Having just left the train from school at St. Austell aged about 14 , watching a train of empty china clay trucks climbing from Par with three pannier tanks, one at the front, one in the middle and one at the rear. They were working really hard and the approach to St. Austell station was really loud.

Remarkable map of Route availability. You learn something every day.

There were no King Class locomotives seen at this time due to RAB limitations, Truro had the nearest operational turntable when the Penzance turntable was out of action.

My brother recently sent me a copy of Steam Days with an article on Cornish Tales, The Steam Age and its people. It is based mainly on Truro station, which was well known to me between 1955-1962 as I had to travel from St. Austell to Truro for school. I seem to vaguely remember that there was a time when the turntable at Penzance was out of order and the larger locomotives came off their train at Truro and were replaced by various tank locomotives. The Cornish Riviera was usually headed by two 2-6-2 locomotives complete with headboard. Does anybody remember this and when it occurred? There was usually a rush to see what "foreign" Castles, Halls, Counties and were at the Truro sheds during this time

I agree with Simonw, with GWR (Great Western Railway) trains using the Camp Hill line and a spur to Moor Street at Bordesley
14  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Two Track, Now! on: November 15, 2019, 15:34:34
The line between Exeter Central and Yeovil Junction needs to be two track all the way between. Two track between Yeovil Junction to Castle Cary should also be considered. The difficulties between Yeovil Junction to Salisbury of two tracks are probably insurmountable at present.

Thank you for the wonderful reply and comments as to the problems which would need to be solved for a bridge to be constructed. Are there many large boats which would to still reach the harbour these days?
