1  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Project/Operation Churchward (Replacement Of GWR Regional Rolling Stock) on: Yesterday at 19:05:20
I thought GWR (Great Western Railway) were trying to do a joint order with Chiltern and East West rail unless the dft have decided they can get GWR some new rolling stock before then by tagging some onto Northerns.

2  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: 175s to GWR on: March 14, 2025, 20:13:51
Quick question, as they are expected to run Exeter - Penzance... how Dawlish proof are they?

They coped between Llanelli and Ferryside where they have a sea wall on parts of thw eoute
3  Journey by Journey / Oxford, Didcot and Reading from the West / Re: New Oxford - Bristol direct service, ongoing developments and discussion on: March 13, 2025, 21:18:14
Why would Milton Keynes be a more attractive destination than Oxford? Huh

People could travel there to connect with other services and destinations plus this service would allow people to avoid have to travel across London or even changing at Birmingham new street etc
4  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in South and West Wales / Re: Connectivity - north to south Wales on: March 13, 2025, 16:32:03
I can see there being a demand for a north to SW Wales service, but not to the extent of 8 coaches a day. Much of the demand will be capable of being satisfied using the existing T1 and 2 services, so as already said, tweaking these plus maybe a couple of through services that are very limited stop, would I would have thought, be a more sensible way of matching demand to supply.

Improving train times, and more importantly, providing greater capacity (ie more carriages) from north to SE Wales would satisfy the greater demand for a reasonably quick and comfortable service from north Wales to Cardiff and Swansea.

I don't think long-distance coach services can ever really fully replace long-distance trains. There will be many people who find being in a coach for several hours (even if it has toilet facilities) very uncomfortable or completely impossible. How would they accommodate wheelchair users and others of limited mobility? What about luggage space (which the current trains fail to provide adequately)?

I think the 1st timetable they proposed which was 4 or 5 coaches per day was acceptable.  The T1.does get very busy in fact it seriously needs later services  especially a 2100 from Carmarthen up.to lampeter at least.

This express should run-through to Swansea at least I think especially serving Crosshands

Not what I was hoping for could really have done with more especially the proposed bridgedeck like Readings at the western end of te statio  to cope with the crowds.

These proposals still see the bottlenecks caused by the two subways. No.idea too.if platform 0 is going to be extended like tfw and network rail want.

As well is this is do hope Cardiff West junction is sorted

Possible progress, with an hourly Bristol-Oxford service hoving in to view. Hopefully.

Long overdue I think it will prove quite popular especially if it ran beyond Oxford to Milton keynes
7  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: 175s to GWR on: March 11, 2025, 16:07:06
According to the article in rail magazine  175008 will not be moving toGWR but will be stripped for spares and scrapped.

Castle HSTs (High Speed Train (Inter City class 43 125 units)) to be withdrawn from service as well as some class150s

If batteries are added to trains so that electric trains can run between Didcot and Oxford instead of not completing the half-finished Didcot-Oxford electrification then I would suggest that we no longer live in a serious country.

Nothing to stop it being a short term thing. Don't forget it free up a class 166/165 or so for use elsewhere however I agree we need didcot to Coventry wired up not just for GWR (Great Western Railway) but freight too.

Wires also need.to.go.to Bristol Tm and Swansea ASAP.

Modern railways is suggesting that GWR (Great Western Railway) are considering up with Chiltern and East-West rail   and putting together a joint order for a fleet of battery electric units and partial electrification.

Certainly it would help GWR if the missing sections of electrification could be filled it however  gwr said didcot to Oxford and back is well within range of current battery units.

In theory then you could fit batteries to the 387s
10  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: 175s to GWR on: March 10, 2025, 19:11:09
There were 27 units, I think a couple of vehicles (from different units) have had accidents so guessing one unit will be a reform and the two vehicles will be spare parts doners

I believe it's 26 units as 175008 has suffered considerable damage i believe things one unit that caught fire while being operated by tfw.

I can speak from.experience as a regular traveller on them that they are lovely units especially after the interior refurbishment done by tfw

From Transport for Wales press release

Transport for Wales is launching a public consultation on proposals for a potential new express coach service that would transform connectivity between North and South Wales.

The proposed service would run between Bangor and Carmarthen, cutting journey times by 90 minutes compared to current public transport options. The express-stop service would call at key town centres and railway stations along Wales' western coast, including Caernarfon, Porthmadog, Dolgellau, Machynlleth, and Aberystwyth.

With an expected journey time of 4 hours 45 minutes, the service is being proposed to provide a faster, more convenient travel option for tourists and university students, while improving connections between communities along the western corridor.

Plans include running up to eight coaches per day, with modern on-board facilities suitable for longer journeys and integration with rail services for onward travel.

The public consultation period will run for four weeks from 3rd March, with an online 'have your say' page where people can learn about the proposals and share their views via a survey.

It's a good idea and will help ease crowding on the T1 and T2 services in particular as well as offering a faster north-south journey time
12  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in South and West Wales / Re: Carmarthen to Aberystwyth railway on: March 01, 2025, 22:37:50
It was some time ago but I spent a lot of time living in Aberystwyth and working during the week in Pembroke. That meant a lot of bus journeys to Carmarthen. The 'express' timetable doesn't seem that much faster than the normal service although as I said it was a long time ago...

Now I've got my driving licence back (medical reasons rather than legal) I'm thinking about a road trip to Aber so will be interesting to compare the times.

I've driven Carmarthen to Aberystwyth  via lampeter and Aberaeron  took me about 95 minutes.  T1 takes about 2 hours 20 minutes

A major study into restarting a rail link in Gwynedd has unveiled a preferred route for a train-tram service. The route between Bangor and Afon Wen on the Llyn Peninsula was closed in the Beeching cuts of the 1960s.

Campaigners have long called for a line to be reinstated and a feasibility study was ordered by Transport for Wales. The North West Wales Feasibility Report by AtkinsRéalis has now been published which shows a preferred route and the many challenges any new line would face.

We don't have a separate Afon Wen to Bangor thread ... because our discussions here have so much been looking at the complete north to south link.  And the work being done by Atkins disappoints many because it's tram trained and street running - not briiant for freight and the idea of getting on a tram at Cardiff Bay, all stops to Cortyon and onwards to Amlwch would be slow and not attractive.

Grahame they also released a separate report looking a express coach service from Carmarthen to Bangor via Aberystwyth  in addition to the T1/T2 bus service.

If Filton and Chippenham to Bristol TM (Train Manager, or possibly Ticket Machine, depending on context)  is wired then GWR (Great Western Railway) have said they will deploy a battery fitted emu on the Cardiff to Portsmouth Harbour service

Sadly, in light of recent apparent comments by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, I cannot see much (any?) of this being funded before the next General Election.

I think we might see Portishead get greenlight as compared to other projects it's small change and does provide a big economic boost to the region
