I checked out the SWT▸ ticket booking site this morning and it was working fine. If, for example, you are starting from Weymouth, just type in Weymouth into the departure station and put your departure time as 08.00, then put in a return time of 16.15 from Salisbury. The train is shown as direct both ways and the return fare £10. The £5 fare applies from Sherborne and Gillingham.

On Saturdays 3rd and 10th December South West Trains are running a Santa Special dmu (class 158/159) from Weymouth and Dorchester West to Salisbury via Yeovil (with reversals).
The train leaves Weymouth at 08.03 returning at 18.25 and the fare is £10 return. Tickets are available online or from ticket offices on the day.
There will be festive fun on board with profits going to the Dorset Weldmar Hospice.
I was told there would be one in the opposite direction (ie day in Weymouth) on 17th December but I haven't seen any evidence yet!

In their updated timetable from May, South West Trains plan one journey each way from London Waterloo to Weymouth via Yeovil Junction and one other service each way from Yeovil Junction to Weymouth on Summer Saturdays only. Trains will stop at all stations on the Heart of Wessex section.

A less expensive option would be to use the "original" route to Weymouth from London Paddington. Currently HSTs▸ take 1 hour 30 mins from Paddington to Castle Cary. Current journey time from Castle Cary to Weymouth is one hour. With infrastructure/signalling improvements, especially around Yeovil Pen Mill/Maiden Newton, this could be reduced by ten minutes, giving a journey time from London Paddington to Weymouth of around 2 hours 20 minutes, and Dorchester West around ten minutes less.
The current service from London Paddington to Castle Cary could be increased to hourly with alternate trains serving Taunton/Exeter or Weymouth. Yeovil would benefit from a two-hourly fast train to London from the better-sited station of Yeovil Pen Mill, close to all the massive new housing developments.
There are already proposals to reinstate double track between Castle Cary and Yeovil Pen Mill. This would give added impetus to this project.
There is huge potential for improved train services between Yeovil and London. Yeovil Pen Mill to Paddington is a faster and more convenient route than via Yeovil Junction.

Secondly, The timetable shows not conveying First class accomodation. Is St Philips Marsh removing the 1st carriages, first class declassified or a weekend first type buy on board offer being made?
It's not showing first-class accommodation as there are no first-class fares between Bristol and Weymouth, so assume first-class seating is available to standard-class ticket holders, as happens when a hired-in SWT▸ class 158 is used on the line.

From the Dorset Echo: New season of Wessex Wanderer walks launches for 2014
A new season of Wessex Wanderer walks starting from stations along the Weymouth to Bristol line has been launched for 2014.
The programme has been running for 20 years and is organised and led by members of the Ramblers.
You do not have to belong to the Ramblers to go on the walks and funding has come from the four Ramblers^ Areas involved ^ Avon, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire, with support from the Heart of Wessex Community Rail Partnership and First Great Western.
Programmes are available from local Tourist Information Centres or by looking on wessexrailways.org.uk The details of the first two walks are Saturday, May 17, for a six-mile, leisurely-paced circular walk including a guided tour of Frome.
This must be booked in advance by May 2 as places are limited.
Book through Ann Light on 0117 9798628.
People should catch the 8.46am from Weymouth, returning on the 3.46pm.
Then, on Wednesday, May 21, there is a medium-paced five-mile or 8/9 mile circular walk from Bath Spa taking in the Cotswold Way, Prospect Stile (shorter option ^ use Park & Ride at Lansdown from here using bus pass), Grenville Monument and Lansdown. Meet the leader outside station and catch the 8.53am from Weymouth, returning on the 5.07pm.
Further information is available from 01202 731363.
The Dorset Echo has the wrong website link. It should read: http://www.wessexrailwaywalks.org.uk/

Penzance {PNZ] - The Longboat Inn
It is right opposite the railway station and I stayed there for one night during the seawall disruption due to the lack of the Night Riviera.
It was ^54.50 including Breakfast - which sadly I didn't get to try as I had to get going early. The room had recently been refurbished and was amply supplied with power points - including some close to the bed. So many hotels forget that people might like to charge their phone within arm's reach while they sleep!
A well stocked bar with real ale and a pretty extensive menu means an evening meal would not involve leaving the hotel.
Only two negative points - the plastic sheet liner did make the bed a little uncomfortable and the room did face the junction with the main road past the station. It didn't worry me but might be more of an issue for a light sleeper.
Have added The Longboat to the website ( http://station-stays.co.uk) on your recommendation and your photos!

Interesting! Not sure why you'd want every hotel/b&b linked to a map.
Example (using the area of the country in my example). I'm going to be working near - say Kemble station but there are no [suitable] hotels near the station. So I'm going to stay near another station and catch the train. Let's see ... there are good hotels near Bath, Gloucester, Moreton-in-Marsh and Swindon stations, and I just thought that overlaying your excellent rail route map with your valuable data would allow people to zoom in on a line and find nearby connected stations. I struggled with your alphabetic list for a near-station hotel that I can use to get to Bow Brickhill ... I agree that there is little point in linking the local points to the stations on a countrywide map. Yes, I see your point now, but Peter Hicks has only given us permission to put a link to his map and not to embed it into our site.
