Chiltern Units don't have air conditioning but air chillers. Makes them easier and quicker to replace when the go wrong.
3  Journey by Journey / North Downs Line / Re: Unit refuelling on: January 03, 2012, 19:25:16
This time, however, turbos had to go via the Quarry Line to get to Selhurst depot - elongating the time they were unavailable for service.  I also suspect that the first two from Wokingham worked from Reading via Basingstoke, Woking and Guildford since they arrived at Wokingham with Reading conductor-guards already aboard.

Although the service looked as if it could be provided with 4 units, there were reports of trips to Selhurst during the day for fuel so some swapping must have occurred and there appeared to be a spare unit at Redhill sidings also.

The first two workings at Wokingham were ECS (Empty Coaching Stock) moves from Guildford where the units were stabled the night before. The guard was taxied from Reading.

The Cheltenham Bound train had a fault with the leading power car. Sets were stepped at Swindon with the London bound train.

7  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Welcome to the oven/overheated/no I mean air conditioned FGW train on: July 14, 2011, 20:29:54
The main problem lies with the design of the coaches, there should be internal doors to create a better enviroment for the aircon unit. not sure if the chiltern sets have that modification.

Hi there, first post. If it was a cable theft or even a serious signalling fault. Normally Network Rail stop trains departing major stations such as Reading, Paddington. This lightens the load of the signallers in the affected area, also stops full trains being trapped with nowhere to go.

Unfortunatly when you have signalling again, stock and train crew are displaced for a while.
