I was on the 1151 from Basingstoke (Heading to Hereford via Westbury and Newport) and it was still very full when  I got off at Westbury.

And what about 'borders' part of the franchise area?
A lot of my family live in Herefordshire and have no choice at all on the make-up of the Welsh Assembly and would definitely be affected by decisions made.
4  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: Class 180s return to the Cotswolds on: December 29, 2012, 19:54:08
it looks like they only had 3 coaches of turbo available.

I was on the 12:06 from Worcester on 27/12, heading towards Basingstoke.

It was a three car turbo, which started out as only going to Oxford because of the disruption between Reading and Paddington, but was then extended to Paddington. No extra coaches were added at Oxford, and I counted 6 sets of turbos in the sidings just before Oxford station!

Forgot to add that the train manager came through the train at Worcester, clearing up litter, and said that the litter had probably been sat there since Christmas Eve, as the train had come up empty.

Luckily for me the XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) service was delayed, so I had a nice 2 minute same-platform change at Oxford instead of trying to change somehow at Reading with my luggage!
5  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Basingstoke to Hereford?? on: March 19, 2012, 18:12:16
Brilliant thanks!
I didn't realise the ^3.50 Super Off-Peak Return was valid so far - I though it was only towards Birmingham!
6  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Basingstoke to Hereford?? on: March 18, 2012, 15:18:49
Hi!
Just wondered if anyone could help me keep the cost of my trip down as much as possible...

I want to travel from Basingstoke to Hereford, leaving sometime around or after 15:00 on Thurs 12/04/11 and then returning sometime on Saturday 14/04/11, preferably in the late afternoon. I could travel up on Friday of cheaper, and then back on Sunday, but Thursday to Saturday is my preference. I have a Network Railcard.

The cheapest that I have found so far is an off-peak return from Basingstoke to Worcester for ^27.70, then a super-off-peak day return for ^3.50 for Thursday, then an off-peak single for 8.20 for the return journey on Saturday. I make that a total of  ^39.40

I couldn't find any advances to help....I don't mind travelling strange routes or being tied to particular trains if this helps!

Can anyone find something better? Thanks!
7  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Help, my head hurts! on: December 12, 2011, 21:54:57
Hi!
Having only just sorted out pland for the Christmas period, I have just spent some time trying to work out the cheapest way to travel, but I am a little confused, and would appreciate some advice.

I would need to travel from Hereford to Basingstoke on 27/12, not early in the day, after 9ish.
I also need to travel from Basingstoke to Cheltenham on 31/12, late afternoon, and then back again to Basingstoke on 02/01, anytime in the afternoon.
I will have a Network Railcard by then (as my Y-P expires on 18/12, and I am no longer under 26 nor studying full-time Sad)
Journey time is not too important, but I would prefer not to travel by replacement coach, if at all possible.

I know that there are some easements with tickets due to engineering works, in a couple of places along the various routes, and that splitting at Didcot (esp. with Network Railcard) could be cheaper.
I've tried a few different combinations, and I think I've just confused myself!

Thanks in advance for any help/advice,
bobg

Nice,
Looks like someone misread Class 150 and Class 172 somewhere...
and assumed that was the number of trains replaced  Smiley
9  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: 'Light rail metro system would solve Hereford's traffic problems' on: December 05, 2011, 19:35:08
Having lived in Hereford for many years, and also travelled fairly widely across Europe, seeing various public-transportation systems; I have often thought that something like this would be a good thing, in theory at least.
However, my experiences of living there though, and regularly visiting family still lead me to believe that it just wouldn't work for the Herefordians - without a car there is no efficient way to travel around the county reliably (despite the traffic problems).
BTW (by the way) I am a non-driver!

Thanks for the suggestions.
I'm just getting ordinary tickets, I get get away from work early enough! Still pretty reasonable I think!
11  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Can anyone help me save money? on: July 02, 2011, 18:50:18
Hi,
Due to a change in plans, I'm unable to use the tickets in the way that I planned, so I'm searching for anyway to reduce the cost of my ticket.

On Tuesday (05/07) I will be leaving Fratton on the train at 0632 heading for Basingstoke. I then later need to get from Basingstoke to Abergavenny by about 5pm, and I probably won't be able to get to Basingstoke Station until 2pm, but may be able to get there earlier.

I was thinking of getting an anytime single from Fratton to Basingstoke, then a super off peak single from basingstoke to abergavenny (changing at Reading and Newport). I have a 16-25 railcard, so this comes to ^32.70.

Is anybody able to help me to reduce this further?

Thanks!

And another Turbo substitution today on the 10.42 from London/14.30 from Hereford. I hope someone arranged an extra Turbo set to join at Oxford.

The 16:33 was also a Turbo today, with First Class declassified right from Hereford.

I was only travelling between Hereford and Worcester, but the guard announced clearly right from Hereford that the service was going to get very busy and that all luggage should be stored on the racks.

He also said that this should be the last week that they are using short trains...
13  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: 16-25 Railcard on: March 22, 2011, 19:47:38
Now, is there any reason why these ridiculously cheap tickets can't be used as singles?

Funnily enough I've just checked train times for this weekend - I will be going to Hereford from Worcester on the Saturday evening and returning on Sunday evening.
On the FGW (First Great Western) site the only fares that appear are ^5.35 for a single or ^8.85 for the return....
If I check for a day return on Saturday, and another one on Sunday, it brings up the ^2.30 option, saving ^4.25.

I know which tickets I'll be buying Smiley
