... and then Donald Trump barges his way into the arena ...  Roll Eyes

Not really. Broadgage is expressing a preference is for classic Keynesian economics.  A theory that, despite being adopted by Franklin Roosevelt during the 1930, Trumps Republican allies at least would regard as so left wing as to be communist.

It is signposted from the railway station.

I know, but I would find it hard to follow them if I didn't already know how to get there

Swindon, the other week, the guy on the barrier didn't know whether the buses had moved to their new locations. In one way there was no reason he should have known, mind. (The new location being arguably better, but also, arguably less functional as an interchange and also further from the station.)

Its not that far from the station!  And it the present site is not that easy to find without directions.
5  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Nottingham to Bristol TM open access service proposed on: April 02, 2025, 19:32:24
I doubt there's room for both. Hence GWR (Great Western Railway) trying to get in first with BRI» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains)-MKC (Milton Keynes Central), I guess.

I doubt there is room on EWR (East West Railway (Oxford to Bedford), or possibly East Worthing station, depending on context) for open access once it gets past Bletchley, if you look at all the planning that has gone into minimising the necessary works, there is only going to be room for the planned services.  That is before capacity on GWR is considered.

There are also backup diesel generators, and uninterruptible battery-powered supplies which provide enough power to keep safety critical systems such as aircraft landing systems running.

However, when the fire broke out the substation, it was out of action, along with its backup.
8  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Plan for M4 to south coast corridor to avoid Bath, through West Wiltshire on: March 16, 2025, 08:56:28
The objective is to avoid Bath.

Bath is already "avoided" ! The closure of the Cleveland Bridge has already stopped heavy traffic from the A46 getting onto the A36 - as it used to do. This has moved traffic from the A46 to the A350. Bath has dumped its HGV problem onto West Wiltshire

Yes that is their problem, the strategic route they had before doesn't work any more so they need a new one.  When they planned it I think they assumed they could build the now aborted Swainswick - Batheaston bypass to avoid Bath.

Warminster to Dorset strategic route remains via the A36 to M27 junction 2, then westward via the A31. I saw a discussion on the SABRE roads forum…

Paul

Just because someone has decided to call a route "strategic" doesn't mean it is capable of handling the required traffic volumes.  If only ...............

Totally agree.  All they are going to do as I understand it, is change the sign posts.  Though if they ever have money to spend on improvements it will be part of the justification.
10  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Plan for M4 to south coast corridor to avoid Bath, through West Wiltshire on: March 15, 2025, 16:23:42
The objective is to avoid Bath.

The proposed route is the A350 as far as Warminster then the A36

It is not ideal I agree, but the existing route is the A46 from the M4 to Bath then the A36 from there. So there is no change in route from Warminster to the Dorset Coast.

Perhaps they should route it by Rail instead.
11  Journey by Journey / Swindon to Gloucester / Cheltenham / Re: Railway station could get 300 extra trains a week thanks to £1.75billion project on: February 24, 2025, 10:49:23
So tempting to mention dreams of a reinstatement of the route to Birmingham "via Honeybourne"

The Midland line up as far as Abbotswood Jcn is going to be very congested with these extras each needing a path, plus the pfaffing about required for a train from the Birmingham direction terminating and reversing at Cheltenham Spa Lansdown

Why would it need to terminate at Cheltenham when it could go on to Gloucester where there is surely plenty of space.

Regional mayor claims victory in Portishead railway reopening funding fight

UK (United Kingdom): West Of England Mayor Dan Norris has announced a ‘landmark’ agreement with the government which paves the way for construction works needed to restart passenger services on the Bristol to Portishead line to begin this summer to enable operation by the end of 2027.

A bridge is much more vulnerable to being hit by a ship, whether accidentally or otherwise.  (Think what happened to the Severn Railway Bridge or more recently the Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore).  They also are vulnerable to closure during storms.
