All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Railcard Prices going up
|

You can only renew a railcard 30 days before expiry. So the earliest would be 3 May ie 1 day after the price rise.
You would need to buy a new 3 year railcard before 3 May to take any advantage of the saving. Therefore, you would be losing £2.50 worth of railcard (£30 / 12).
If you took no advantage of any discount offers:
£70 of 36 months travel works out at £1.94 per month. £80 of 36 months travel works out at £2.22 per month.
Buying a new railcard before 3 May is a 56p loss (£2.50 - £1.94).
If you bought at 25% off:
£52.50 of 36 months travel is £1.45 per month, meaning a £1.05 loss.
----
If you worked it out per day.
£30 / 365 = 8ppd £70 / 1095 = 6ppd £80 / 1095 = 7ppd
You therefore make a total loss of 60p for 30 days (£2.40 - £1.80).

By having an RSSB▸ account.
A comfort score is Dimensional features + Pad & Back Rest thickness + Compression. Maximum score 100
Dimensional features includes: a) seat height (target 440 mm ±10 mm above the floor) b) Seat depth (good practice value to be 435 mm ±10 mm) c) Seat width and gap between armrests (highest attainable score for 460mm - 503mm with or without armrests, but a without score is handicapped) d) Backrest width (highest attainable score for >549mm) e) Armrest height (highest attainable score for fully adjustable, second highest 230mm - 250mm if non adjustable) f) Underside of headrest to seat [distance from the seat's sitting surface to the passenger's acromion] (highest attainable score for 660mm - 680mm) g) Angle of seat (highest attainable score for -6° to -9°) h) Angle between seat and back (highest attainable score for 100° - 105°) i) Legroom (highest attainable score for >766mm) [legroom is measured from the back of the seat to the back of the seat in front] j) Bay seating arrangement (higest attainable score for > 1531mm) [measured from back of seat to the back of the seat opposite] k) Clearance under tablet (650 - 690mm) l) Tablet depth (151 - 200mm)
With regards to the seat pad, some choice figures are: "It is good practice for the minimum seat pad thickness to be 50 mm." "The seat pad's target minimum compression is 40% of the overall seat pad thickness." at 500N "The maximum allowable compression is 70% of the overall seat pad thickness." at 1000N "The minimum target is 5% or less of deformation after 50,000 cycles."

All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: On difficulties obtaining the fares that are in the system

This having to pick a specific train has turned into quite a bugbear recently...
A lot of people now buy on apps, and because they're given an itinerary they assume they have an 'advance' ticket and can't travel on a different train. I ask to see their ticket and it turns out to be an Off-Peak Return or whatever. It does say 'suggested' or whatever somewhere on the itinerary but still.
I suppose if it didn't happen they might use the off-peak ticket on a peak train without realising
Your last sentence is certainly very true too. Very often people don't know or, more importantly, understand what they are buying, and are assuming they have a flexible ticket, when actually they have an advance or (in the case of trainline) a [very limiting] split.

The trainsplit fare is cheapest, but not cheapest due to the share of savings add on, eliminate that at the ticket office.
The rest are relying on advance fares, which are quota controlled. Trainsplit is just including walk up fares as all the advances that are available are dearer.
On your chosen itinerary, the DCR isn't valid until 08.45 (at Plymouth), but off peak doesn't become valid until Totnes. If you're able to drop back to the 08.05 departure, which means you'll arrive at Exeter Central 10 minutes later than planned, on walk up fares you'll have SAU - PLY» SDR £23.10 + £11.55 & PLY - EXC CDR▸ with DCR £9.75 + £1 = £45.40. Cheaper advance fares might be available.

GWR▸ appear to be launching a rewards programme in March.
From what I understand, signing up will start you on Bronze tier and you progress up to Silver and Gold.
Bronze tier gets you 1 free on board beverage, 1 40% off a ticket voucher and 10% off on board food and drink. Silver (50 points) goes up to 15% off on board food/drink; Gold (120 points) 20% off. Silver and Gold earn you free tickers, lounge access and Pullman dining offer.
You will earn points by booking via GWR.com & GWR app. 10 points for spending £30-69.99 per day and 20 points for >£70. PAYG▸ points are earned depending on your weekly capped spend. Points reset on the anniversary of your sign up.
Sounds interesting, sadly too late for me having just spent over £200 on upcoming trips. Out of interest what is your source for this story as there doesn't appear to be anything publicly shared about it From GWR staff. There's been an internal brief. When it goes live gwr.com/rewards

3. Okehampton’s only connected and operational platform is No.3, the former Up main platform. The tracks of the former and still signed plats 1 and 2, looked after by the small band of station friends, stretch west into the overgrowing wilderness of hope and despair.
