I saw with my own eyes at about half 6 today at Portsmouth Harbour a 3 coach 158 refurbed sat waiting to leave, such a wonderful sight at last!
2  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: 'BETTER OFF WITHOUT FGW' on: March 20, 2008, 15:03:43
I don't think kicking them off entirely is the right idea, perhaps the line's they truely *are* screwing up instead or giving them one last chance to improve before kicking them swiftly off the network and finding someone who *can* run a service. But again, with change comes problems, I await the "X Company is rubbish, bring up FGW (First Great Western)" within the first months of a new company running.

Would explain why we had a FGW (First Great Western) unit last night for the 22:30 service from Cardiff Central to Portsmouth Harbour. Any idea why we had to have it replaced at all guys?
I don't understand your question, but if it was a refurbished 158 which is in FGW livery you are quite lucky as they are very nice inside.

Sorry that I wasn't clear, I meant that the 158 was replaced with a 150 refurbed by FGW. Was just curious why that was, and even more so as another 150 unrefurbed replaced a 158 this morning.

6  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Severe weather - snow / rain / flooding forecasts - ongoing discussion (merged topic) on: March 10, 2008, 19:35:26
Well I managed to get home (only discovering that I'd left my keys in Didcot when I was on the final steps of Fratton doh) after 4 hours of travelling. Mainly down to me just missing the Basingstoke service to Reading and then being told of a phantom Bournemouth service from Reading..that never existed. But got home in the end, thanks to FGW (First Great Western) and XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)), and funny enough the 158 while not in good shape got back to Fratton two minutes early Cheesy

Oh cack, I have to get home from Didcot tomorrow and theres warnings for the Portsmouth area and Southampton.
8  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: Why did we slow down? on: March 08, 2008, 10:15:48
As eight said, was before Westbury, I was just curious as to why we stopped but not to worry ^.^
9  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Why did we slow down? on: March 07, 2008, 13:25:05
I took the 1447 service from Fareham to Cardiff getting off at Bath Spa yesterday (I'd also like to retract a previous statement saying I've never seen staff at BS, I saw a lot yesterday it turns out), and as we approached a rail bridge over another train line, we stopped dead just before the bridge and waited 5 minutes for the train on the line below to pass and hurtle towards its next stop.

Does anyone know why we'd have to stop to let a train beneath us pass? I'm more curious then anything  Huh

Mookiemoo, all stations on the SWT (South West Trains) network either have a Ticket Vending Machine or a PERTIS (Permit to travel) machine. If you cannot buy a ticket from one of these, then see the guard. They are always in the middle of the train on the class 458 operated trains, or the rear if it is only a 4 coach. Invariably, they are non-commercial and cannot issue tickets.

The point is on this particular day I showed up at Egham 20 minutes before my train - which was 40 minutes before the last train I could get and still make my meeting

It took me 37 minutes to get parked.

As I ran out of the car park the train was already going over the level crossing.

If I did not get that train, I was going to miss my meeting

I had left plenty of time on any normal day - how was I supposed to know half of the car park was coned off.

Or do you suggest that people miss trains whilst buying a ticket?   And dont say leave earlier - how early does one have to leave!

Purchase your tickets in advanced if you have an important meeting to attend to. You can easily do it online and have them delivered to your home address or if the station your going to has a FastTicket machine get them there.

Also to my knowledge there has been advised information regarding SWT's car park upgrades over the last few months, so you should of seen the information in the stations you use.

So the fine you got was justily given, you broke the rules by boarding a train without a ticket and were fined for doing it. You would expect no less from SWT or any other Train Company if it was some "yob" who didn't buy a ticket either.

They should be caught and made to clean it up, but in some cases some of the work produced (not on the trains mind, more the walls that look tatty/ugly otherwise) is actually quite good. In those cases surely finding those people and asking them to help brighten up stations that are otherwise dull and rather depressing to look at might be an idea.

Oh and to anyone who goes from Reading anywhere, take a look at the tall building nearby to the station, towards the top floor..how insane must that guy of been?
13  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Abusive kids who won't buy tickets- what can be done? on: March 05, 2008, 13:13:10
I am sorry to hear that story, I know what it's like to be set on and it's deeply unpleasant and un-nerving and I'm also disgusted to hear that they got out early, I never understand that - sorry, you get 13 months, you do 13 months.  Prison shouldn't be easy - it should be horrible.  It's punishement.  If you hurt someone, or kill someone or rape someone, you give up your human rights as you were quick enough to take them from someone else.  I have very strong views on this, and they are mostly generated by my despair at the direction our society is going in.

Whats even more disgusting is that they "demand" access to the Internet, Colour TV's etc. I'm all for prison reform, but when you break the law, you loose the right to the nice things in life while your inside. Once your out, you make amends and you sort it out. Heck inside if you haven't any qualifications, they can help you get useful skills on the outside. I've a friend who's a reformed prisoneer and he says it was the best thing that happened to him, he now runs his own business in plumbing up in my old stomping grounds.

But back to the main point, we need more guards, more security and better protection for users of the transport network and the employees on it. The abuse of any of them has to be stopped.

I come back to my original point, the authorities say they want normal people to help police our streets but there's no incentive and people are unsure of where they stand and have little faith in the police to back them up anymore.  You only had to watch the news last night to here the latest on the lad who was killed by two yobs when he confronted them after they threw rubbish into his car.

There is no fear of the police force, I was nearly killed for my mobile phone by a lad no older then myself at the time, I managed to get away and still with my mobile phone but was so shaken up that I collapsed in the police station. He got 13 months for attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and two further counts of robbery of others he had done it to.

He got out 6 months later, on the same day as my birthday. I have a lot less faith in the justice and police system since.

Best cure I know off, Little ******* of 11, a real One boy crime wave, was out in the street about 1am, van pulls up 4 or 5 masked men took the Brat for a Ride, and gave him a warning ANYMORE trouble and YOU will just disappear never to be seem again.
That's a very fast cure!

While I don't agree with the method, the result was a good one. It's a shame that children are allowed to grow up into the yobs/thugs/people who seem to think for only themselves and not about the results of their actions on others. Those of that mindset are a dieing breed in today's society and it's a damned shame. I truely hope we re-think some of things within our justice system, our police force and some of the stupid EU» (European Union - about) laws that we're forced to follow.
