1  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: New Units revisited on: July 25, 2009, 10:58:41
This electrification programme radically affects the requirements for rolling stock over the next decade. There will be far less need for diesel trains and a greater requirement for electric trains. In particular, the previously-planned procurement by the Government of new diesel trains has now been superseded.  We will accordingly publish a new rolling stock plan in the autumn, taking account of the changed circumstances.

This suggests that the new build stock for Cardiff-Pompey will never happen. Expect to see cascaded Class 165/166 some time around 2016. Or maybe 5 car HSTs (High Speed Train) when they start to be offloaded from London-Cardiff.

And last Saturday, FGW (First Great Western) ran a HST (High Speed Train) set with SSL (Short Swing Link bogies (125)) bogies from Bristol to Portsmouth and back as a footie train.

I have heard from a reliable source (based on what i've been told previously), that SWT (South West Trains) have offered to take over running Portsmouth - Bristol/Cardiff, Weymouth and Exeter area services.

They currently have a surplus of DMUs (Diesel Multiple Unit) (for the next 2 years). I know that SWT have wanted to do this before - I wonder if this time they will get the chance...
