All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / GWR's Twitter 'service'

Now that it seems impossible to contact the railways for information by phone, GWR▸ claim they reply to questions on their Twitter account. However, I almost never get an answer to a travel query. I can see that some people do. Does anyone else have the same problem with them?

Having put up with many months of work on the front of swindon station, things look like they might finally be nearing completion. I am wondering if the bus stop is likely to be reinstated? When you arrive in Swindon late at night it has been very unpleasant having to walk to the town bus stops, because of all the undesirables who hang out in the pedestrianised shopping cente, which the bus stops look down on - and they look up to! I find it especially scary because I have a dog with me, and they have their lovely "bullie" type dogs with them.
Does anyone know?

All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Single Fares Hikes

My single fare from London to Swindon has gone up by ^14.50. I was paying ^20 booking in advance, now it will be ^34.50. I think this is outrageous. I don't have the luxury of being able to travel when I like. Compared to French, Spanish and Portuguese train fares FGW▸ charges way too much - I think ^20 is just about reasonable for a short journey such as London to Swindon, anything more is simply greed. II wonder what bonuses FGW bosses are getting this year? I have never had a bonus in my job, and feel that I am completely at the mercy of greedy companies like FGW.

All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / 2010 advance fares - massive rise?

I usually book the 17.15 train from London Paddington to Swindon. I book on the internet and pay ^20.00. I am trying to book for January, and the cheapest train now seems to be ^34.50 at this time, and hovering the mouse over it you get a message saying the fare is only valid for trains travelling through Slough. The normal route for the 17.15 is Reading, Didcot, Swindon. What is going on? Am I really going to have to pay ^14.50 more?

All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Ironic email from FGW

I received this email too, offering me a 10% discount on fares. The fare I normally pay is ^20.00, from London to Swindon, on an advance internet booking. I clicked on the link, and was taken to the 10% discount page. When I put in the journey details, it came up with my normal ^20 fare, then added ^2.20 on, then deducted ^2.20, leaving me with my original fare of ^20.00!
When I contacted FGW▸ about this, they first sent me back an email denying all knowledge of a discount being offered. When I persisted, they sent me another email saying not to worry, that although the discount does not appear on the payment page, I would see that it would be discounted when I got my bank statement. I have just received my bank statement, and I have been chareged ^60 (for 3 journeys) which is what I would normally pay. Does the right hand know what the left hand is doing?? It would seem not!

I received an email from First Great Western, with whom I am a frequent traveller. It offered me a 10% discount on fares. When I put in the journey details, it came up with my normal ^20 fare, then added ^2.20 on, then deducted ^2.20, leaving me with my original fare of ^20.00!!

When I persisted, they sent me another email saying not to worry, that although the discount does not appear on the payment page, I would see that it would be discounted when I got my bank statement. I have just received my bank statement, and I have been charged ^60 (for 3 journeys) which is what I would normally pay. Has anyone else experienced this stunning piece of dishonesty? I am going to try and take it further, suggestions would be welcome about how to get some redress.
