Looking at the governments recent decision to abolish NHS England deemed a quango; is the new Briitish Railways just another quango overseen by the Department of Transport.
2  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: Looe timetable changes this Summer on: March 06, 2025, 08:56:25
If they did provide a taxi and three other customers heard about and paid the rail fare GWR (Great Western Railway) might even make a profit.
3  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: 175s to GWR on: March 05, 2025, 09:10:16
175001 and 175003 were dragged from Ely to Wolverton works yesterday. Presumably for modifications and painting??

The four 175s at Laira must be enough for training purposes.

Might this be a forerunner of making all Cornish services start/stop at Exeter St Davids I wonder?
Hopefully not.

The only reason I can see them doing that is to stop uncoupling 2 five car units at Plymouth which is probably the most efficient use of the stock than using a nine car from Paddington-Penzance which most passengers like.

If they do stop them at Exeter then platform 6 is going to be tied up unless they have a short turn round time.

3 two cars and one three car 002/007/009/114 now at Laira

 7 two car and 15 three car 001/003-006/010/011 & 101-113/115/116 at Ely
008 possible also at Ely or at Alstom

There could easily be another 7 or 8 at Laira by the end of April.

175010 left Leicester goods yard Tuesday and is back at Ely.

175007 has now left Ely today on it's way to Laira arriving tomorrow.

Apparently they have modifications to be done at Laira including a new drivers seat.
7  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Planning permission needed to use a residence as a holiday home or let on: February 20, 2025, 22:02:23
If outline planning permission with reserved matters 3 years. If you then submit detailed planning permission (reserved matters in the outline) then another 2 years. If you apply for permission with all the details then 3 years.

In big developments land owners or potential landowners apply for outline planning permission, get it, then sell to a builder to actually do the work.

Problems arise when a developer applies for planning permission and don't own all the land in the application.

This might interest some on here re redevelopment of one site in Paignton where the housing element has not started and the planning permission is about to lapse.

While this has been going on other housing sites predominately on green field sites have been completed and as of now three other green field sites within two miles are under construction.

Torbay is always in trouble over land supply in not having enough yet they have many sites, some brownfield, where no work has started and the big builders don't seem to want to build more than 150 houses a year to maintain prices and not create a glut. If councils did build more houses then builders will start pulling out or charge more to build them for the council.

Also down here many homes on these new estates seem to be bought by local authorities in the north and moving people down here so that does not help house the locals. I don't know if this is happening in more inland areas. It is a reflection of problems in seaside towns with bed and breakfast accommodation being used by outside local authorities
to house their homeless.

Torquay has some of the most expensive properties in the UK (United Kingdom) up there with Sandbanks and Salcombe, and also some of the most poorest.

Just a rant as housing supply is never going to keep up with the relentless population rise.

175007 left Ely yesterday. Got as far as Leicester when it was realised they had the wrong unit, 175010, which has axle problems.

Apparently still at Leicester in the goods yard.

That was another tour of England! Will they still need two Class 37s when they go into service?

Supposed to be about speed restrictions. Seeing the youtube video I'd like to know what speed it was going.

Another thing that surprises me is only one unit at a time will take ages. They have moved two units before.

Another 175 arrived at Laira this morning 90 minutes early after leaving Ely nearly 4 hours late!
14  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Train departed 3 minutes earlier than scheduled on: January 16, 2025, 10:08:40
The only reason I can see for a train to leave early is if it was overcrowded.

I wonder if this power failure was due to renewables, wind and solar, only providing 6% of electricity on the 13th.
Daily Telegraph reporting gas was supplying 72.5%, Nuclear 10%, wood burning 6.6%, wind 5.8%, solar nil and the rest from interconnecter cables..
