All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture Overseas / Re: Rail fare price cuts - Germany

If we were serious about cutting carbon we'd cut fares and spend the money allocated for HS2▸ on lengthening trains instead. However we aren't serious about cutting carbon emissions so it won't happen. Instead we'll have continually rising prices, overcrowded trains and a huge white elephant to move people from Birmingham to London 20 minutes quicker.... and most of the public will love it and keep voting for it. Glad I have a reliable new car and don't use Crosscountry trains anymore !

It does make you wonder, after at least 5 years of concerted effort, research, planning, and document preparation by North Somerset DC▸ , the LEP» , and now WECA» what exactly is left to do that is going to take DfT» and a minister 18 months to make a decision on something so blindingly obviously needed. Beggars belief.
Because a) Its not in London. b) It doesn't move bankers into the city faster. c) North Somerset will return Tory MP▸ 's irrespective of spending in the locality. You could get a root vegetable elected there if it had 'Conservative' next to the voting box ! Hence the confusion in government and the many more months of dithering.... they probably don't even know where Portishead is. A five year old could work out there was an overwhelming case for reinstatement inside 10 minutes.

Shame - I had my first trip to Ireland this year on the Fishguard - Rosslare route and thoroughly enjoyed it. Without the rail link to Waterford I didn't bother visiting anything other than the Rosslare - Dublin rail route. Absolutely crazy that you can't use rail to go cross country unless you go to Dublin and change there.
The sail - rail tickets are amazing value only cost me about £45 from Gloucester to Rosslare, and £37 Dublin - Gloucester. Great fun.

Journey by Journey / Transport for London / Re: Climate change protests to target overground?

I suppose that its very difficult to protest in a way that gets noticed without inconveniencing the public to some degree. We should make sure all houses are properly insulated as other nations have done - but how do you protest ? Climbing up someone's loft with some glass fibre is hardly news worthy !
The problem is at the heart of capitalism itself - and changing our priorities away from making 100 people more wealthy than entire nations towards a fairer sustainable future for all isn't something the establishment are prepared to countenance. They will need to be forced into it eventually whether they like it or not. The alternative is that we put private profit first, ignore the consequences and everyone looses.

All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Great Western Main Line electrification - ongoing discussion

As I understand it these trains have a design life of 27.5 years. Would it be far-fetched to imagine that they will probably have a mid-life refit? If so, perhaps we can hope that this will involve some removal of diesel kit, to coincide with the extension of electrification.
That would give about 14 years to have the remaining electrification completed. Once upon a time I would have said that was no problem but now...... My thinking too, although I think the most likely outcome will be a mad panic in just under 27½ years' time. Years later, as the 40th anniversary of the first IETs▸ approaches, plans will be announced to replace them. This will raise a storm of protest from the many passengers who love them greatly, especially for their comfy seats and visionary catering trolleys, and don't think the replacements, to be supplied under the only international trade we have signed since Brexit, will be much good. I mean, what does North Korea know about trains, eh? We could always make new trains in the UK▸ under a publicly owned system. Oh wait that would be a disaster wouldn't it.... HST▸ was superior to Hitachi's efforts and that was made decades ago !
