1  Journey by Journey / London to South Wales / Re: Emergency engineering work between Bristol/Newport on: July 04, 2010, 20:30:54
Because trains to/from Swansea are not calling at Bristol Parkway are they bypassing Bristol Parkway or are they being diverted via Bristol Temple Meads?
2  Journey by Journey / London to South Wales / Emergency engineering work between Bristol/Newport on: July 04, 2010, 20:00:32
Train services are being disrupted due to emergency engineering works. According to the National Rail Enquiries website the emergency engineering works are taking place between Severn Tunnel Junction and Patchway. Train services to/from Swansea are not calling at Bristol Parkway and train services to/from Cardiff Central are starting/terminating at Bristol Parkway with rail replacement buses in operation between Bristol Parkway and Newport (South Wales). This disruption will continue for the remainder of today.

As I recall this emergency engineering work happened in the same location before on a Sunday a few weeks ago.
3  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / Re: Failed train at Upwey/Saturday nightmare return journey on: July 04, 2010, 19:48:35
No machines at Keynsham anymore
The one at Oldfield Park hasn't been replaced either though it's shelter remains so maybe it will reappear one day. Not that it was ever convenient to use if you were heading to Weymouth as the the machine was on platform 1.

Yes. I noticed that the ticket machine at Oldfield Park has disapeared. Perhaps it was vandalised, along with the Keynsham ticket machine.
4  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / Re: Failed train at Upwey/Saturday nightmare return journey on: July 04, 2010, 19:45:32
Yes the last train out of Weymouth on a Saturday night has quite a reputation as you found out and is best avoided.

Yes. We will avoid it in future. It is just not worth it.
5  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The West - but NOT trains in the West / Boarding controls at W-S-M due to the T4 On The Beach Event on: July 04, 2010, 17:27:28
Boarding controls will be in operation tonight at Weston-super-Mare as train services are expected to be extremely busy due to the T4 On The Beach Event. BTP (British Transport Police) will also be present at the station.
6  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / Re: Weymouth ghost train? on: July 04, 2010, 16:13:00
The 08:19 service from BPW» (Bristol Parkway - next trains) to WEY does run. It starts at Worcester Shrub Hill at 06:47 and departs Parkway at 08:19 and Temple Meads at 08:40. The trains returns from Weymouth at 11:10. It is normally worked by a class 158.
7  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / Failed train at Upwey/Saturday nightmare return journey on: July 04, 2010, 15:59:53
On Saturday me and my mum went to Weymouth. We caught the 09:17 loco hauled service from Keynsham which was very enjoyable but had no FGW (First Great Western) staff onboard to collect fares. so, for the majority a free journey. Only 1 member of staff from EWS (English Welsh & Scottish Railway Ltd, now known as DB Schenker Rail (UK (United Kingdom))) who had to control the doors. No announcements were made and no revenue collection all the way to Weymouth.

The 16:08 Weymouth to Great Malvern service terminated at Upwey due to a fault with the front engine involving a class 150. This resulted in 50 passengers being stranded on the platform while the train went back to Weymouth Jersey Sidings to fully rectify the problem.

The stranded passengers had to wait for the 16:55 Weymouth to Bristol Temple Meads service which had to make an additional stop at Upwey to pick up all these passengers. This service didn't depart Weymouth until 17:25. The next service from Weymouth at 17:28 didn't depart Weymouth until 18:10. So they were waiting on the platform for approx 1hr 20mins for the next train.

The train we caught was the 20:21 from Weymouth to Bristol Temple Meads (3 coach class 158) which departed late due to the late arrival of the 20:08 from Gloucester which arrived at 20:18. Our train slowly made its way into the platform. The platform was packed with loud drunks smoking on the platform and even BTP (British Transport Police) were present on the station. The moment the train doors opened everybody rushed on board like sheep. We were the last on but we still managed to get a comfortable seat. There was 3 guards on the train. 1 was controlling the doors and the other 2 was revenue collecting which took some considerable amount of time to complete. 1 of the guards told us that the 20:21 on a Saturday is the worst train on the whole network as it is extremely busy, noisy and has to have BTP present on it, she also said that it is even worse than the 23:11 from BTM (Bristol Temple Meads (strictly, it should be BRI) but BTM is a commonly used alternative)) to Frome on a Saturday. The majority of passengers alighted at Yeovil Pen Mill with BTP also in attendance there.

The driver told me that there is now a 40mph speed limit between Castle Cary and Dorchester West.

We arrived into Bristol Temple Meads 20mins late at 23:06. We will definately not be coming back on the 20:21 service on a Saturday again.
8  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: New CCTV system planned for Bridgwater station on: July 01, 2010, 00:33:12
Long wait for the new departure board and CCTV (Closed Circuit Tele-Vision) cameras. At least the help points have been installed I suppose.
9  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Fatality in the Twyford area- 30/6/2010 on: July 01, 2010, 00:30:05
Yet another fatality on the line between Reading and London Paddington. This time it happened at Twyford. It is inevitable as the trains pass through so fast. Was it because the women died earlier and he wanted to kill himself? so he decided to jump in front of a passing train. Trains are still being disrupted this morning but only slight delays. Update from the FGW (First Great Western) website at 00:30.

Line problem between London Paddington and Reading.

Train services have been disrupted due to a person hit by a train earlier between London Paddington and Reading. Short notice alterations and delays of up to 15 minutes may still occur.

NXEA (National Express East Anglia) probably used their HST (High Speed Train (Inter City class 43 125 units))'s.
11  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon - Central, North and South / Re: Teignmouth CIS troubles on: July 01, 2010, 00:11:36
Which stations will be getting the new customer information system? Does that mean that there will be new departure boards and announcements? When will it be up and running?
12  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / National Express East Anglia to Penzance on: June 28, 2010, 00:22:57
I was looking at the Bristol Temple Meads live departure board on Saturday and I saw a National Express East Anglia service to Penzance. I was very suprised as you don't normally see those trains in the West.

It started at Tame Bridge Parkway and terminates at Penzance. There was also services from Penzance to Gloucester and London Paddington.

I thought it may be summer Saturday only services. Does anybody else know about them?
13  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / Re: Speed restrictions between Castle Cary and Dorchester West on: June 27, 2010, 00:27:29
Gosh, that was a slow journey going 40mph from Castle Cary to Dorchester West. The lorry must have struck Bincombe tunnel. Do you know what time the 0909 from Bristol Temple Meads arrived at Weymouth?
14  Journey by Journey / London to Swindon and Bristol / Re: Different route to avoid using the tube on: June 26, 2010, 21:32:42
But won't their tickets include the Tube if tehy are through tickets?

Yes, our tickets include using the tube.
15  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / Speed restrictions between Castle Cary and Dorchester West on: June 26, 2010, 21:23:02
Speed restrictions owing to a trespasser on the line between Castle Cary and Dorchester West is causing severe delays of up to 60 minutes.

I guess the trains had to go really slow in case the trespasser showed up again.
