Title: Severe Delays at Swindon 18th December
Post by: ellendune on December 18, 2011, 13:42:36
My daughter caught the 10:15 from Cardiff to Swindon today which was stopped outside Swindon for over 1 hour 30 minutes before being able to move into the platforms.  Even with the the problems why was a train left standing just outside a station for such a long time? There was no information as to the likely extent of the delays.

prehaps because there was no where else for it to go, Engineering works at South Marston  on the down main meant that platform 4 was closed meaning that only platfrom 1 and 3 were avalible .
Due to the Engineering works all services were using the bi directional up main, a track circuit failure at approx 930 , meant that pilotman working was introduced which resulted in a huge backlog of trains at each side of the problem

If there was already single track working then that makes more sense.  Also if effectively the blockage was that close then there would have been nowhere to stack trains east of the Station either.
