Title: West Wiltshire Station Quiz Post by: Lee on November 13, 2007, 15:08:21 From December 2007 , a location in West Wiltshire will be served by 11 times the number of trains per weekday than the number of trains that are scheduled to call at Melksham , also in West Wiltshire.
However , the location has around 20000 less people living there than live in Melksham. Can you name the location? So let me get this right - Melksham has one train per six thousand population per day, but this other place has one train per ninety population per day? It has to be a junction or changing point does, it, Lee? Surely that service can't be based on just the local population? Title: Re: West Wiltshire Station Quiz Post by: BandHcommuter on November 13, 2007, 15:34:28 Probably Avoncliff, since I think Freshford is over the border in NE Somerset.
Talking of Somerset, Melksham has an infinitely better train service than the borough of Norton Radstock, a conurbation of similar size! Talking of Somerset, Melksham has an infinitely better train service than the borough of Norton Radstock, a conurbation of similar size! Spot on , vacman and BandHcommuter. In the 2001 census , Melksham was marked down as having 21000 inhabitants , while Avoncliff is described as having "27 homes (3 of which are actually in the parish of Winsley), several boat homes and a public house." From December 2007 , 44 weekday trains (a rise of 4) are scheduled to call at Avoncliff station , while just 4 weekday trains (a rise of 0) are scheduled to call at Melksham. On the Norton Radstock issue , the possibility of achieving a single return journey between Radstock and Swindon via Westbury , Trowbridge , Melksham and Chippenham was looked at , but effectively sunk by a pessimistic assessment by the consultancy firm Atkins (link below.) http://www.bathnes.gov.uk/committee_papers/PTandE/990128/31radsto.htm Title: Re: West Wiltshire Station Quiz Post by: BandHcommuter on November 13, 2007, 15:57:35 On the Norton Radstock issue , the possibility of achieving a single return journey between Radstock and Swindon via Westbury , Trowbridge , Melksham and Chippenham was looked at , but effectively sunk by a pessimistic assessment by the consultancy firm Atkins (link below.) http://www.bathnes.gov.uk/committee_papers/PTandE/990128/31radsto.htm Yes indeed - I would imagine the most abundant passenger flow would be towards Bath and Bristol, and I can't see that line being reopened in my lifetime!
