Title: extremely outdated sign Post by: LiskeardRich on December 04, 2011, 23:55:50 Walking through long rock earlier past fgw depot, noticed the road sign for the depot has a "great western" logo on it. I.e. the one used before first were involved! Is there anywhere else where old logos can be found?

Title: Re: extremely outdated sign Post by: chrisoates on December 05, 2011, 01:05:55 There's lots of them - Station benches for starters often have the logo in the frame - the overbridges at Redruth & St Austell also have them - the refurbished Redruth bridge is a particularly nice example.
Title: Re: extremely outdated sign Post by: inspector_blakey on December 05, 2011, 06:07:53 We may be talking about different Great Westerns here...! I think the OP refers to the "Merlin" logo as used by Great Western Trains from privatization until it was replaced with the corporate First branding, whereas the post above I think is referring to the old Great Western Railway "GWR", which well over 60 years after the GWR ceased to exist can still be spotted all over the system.

Yes the sign I refer to features the merlin, Title: Re: extremely outdated sign Post by: Rhydgaled on December 05, 2011, 09:55:16 The CRT TV information displays at Aberystwyth station still have a 'screensaver' showing a Wales&West/Wales&Borders logo. Station nameboards occasionally have the old TOC's branding too, but sadly not much of that here in Wales.
Title: Re: extremely outdated sign Post by: super tm on December 05, 2011, 10:22:44 Towards the bristol end of platform 8 at reading there is a 6 car marker. Its in chocolate and cream and I assume comes from BR (western region) days so would be about 1950. Could be earlier though.
Next time I get the chance I will take a photo as I am sure it will go with the redevlopment of the station. Title: Re: extremely outdated sign Post by: JayMac on December 05, 2011, 10:50:59 I'll just post so folks can see my avatar - which was the logo of Great Western Trains Ltd until the their takeover by First Group in 1998.
(http://i598.photobucket.com/albums/tt68/bignosemac/gwt.png) First already had a 24.5% stake in GWT following the merger of Grampian Regional Transport and Badgerline bus companies which formed First Bus, later renamed First Group. Badgerline being one of three entities behind Great Western Holdings, the other two being a team of former BR Managers (51%) and venture capitalists 3i (24.5%). First Group bought out the management team and 3i in 1998 and Great Western Trains was renamed First Great Western. In years to come when you have changed your avatar this post is going to make no sense at all! ;D ;D Title: Re: extremely outdated sign Post by: JayMac on December 05, 2011, 11:12:23 Good point bobm, I do have a habit of changing avatars. My post has been edited to include the logo!

Its in chocolate and cream and I assume comes from BR (western region) days so would be about 1950. Could be earlier though. By contrast midway down the current platform 4 (soon to be platform 7) they have just put up one of the new Network Rail style white on blue signs pointing towards platforms 1,2 & 3. I assume it is up already as these ones are not being renamed at Christmas. Title: Re: extremely outdated sign Post by: LiskeardRich on December 05, 2011, 17:52:00 yes the road sign i referred to does feature BNM's avatar. it is directly opposite long rock depot on what is known locally as "long rock road" unsure if that is the actual road name!
Title: Re: extremely outdated sign Post by: vacman on December 05, 2011, 21:13:43 At Newquay station, at the entrance by Burger King there is one sign overhead as you enter the platform and cant remember for the life of me what the sign is for, but it has the old Wales & West logo along the bottom.
Title: Re: extremely outdated sign Post by: JayMac on December 05, 2011, 22:39:50 I spotted this sign at Cardiff Central this past week. Appeared to be one sticker but not quite correct. Current logo, old name. Whilst 'Great Western Trains Company Limited' still exists, it's most recent accounts were just a list of ^0s
Title: Re: extremely outdated sign Post by: bobm on December 05, 2011, 23:25:07 Depending where you use your debit card on FGW it comes up on the statement variously as First Greatwestern, First Greater West or First Gtr Western. I have had all three on my statement today after a trip last week.

Title: Re: extremely outdated sign Post by: chuffed on December 06, 2011, 08:37:21 Has anyone else noticed the ancient 'stillage' signs on blackboards in the handwritten whitewash style on Platform 6 or is it 8 at Temple Meads ? Also to be almost as pedantic as BNM..... has anyone noticed the large freestanding pink and purple notices at TM about the trolleys where EVERY Word Begins With A Capital Letter ?!!!! Pointed It Out To The Duty Station Manager But No Action Taken. Perhaps Someone Would Like To Point It Out At The Meet The Manager Session Today ??
Title: Re: extremely outdated sign Post by: JayMac on December 06, 2011, 12:09:24 Well, yes. I have noticed the old 'stillage' signs at Bristol Temple Meads. They're on Platform 6. Just the sort of thing, being the pedant that I am, that I notice!

That sign which is still there says "Station Entrance" It should also be noted that Newquay was renamed "Newouav" when the FGW banner was installed on the Station departure boards.
