Title: North West Pacers and 150s were supposed to be class 210s.

Something that's circulating around forums at present and referenced to the book- Rail Centres: Manchester by Stanley Hall is that the 1980s orders of Pacers and 150s for the North West is something the local councils and passenger executives were against.  They wanted an order of versatile dual powered class 210s, which would have eventually replaced all 1st gen DMUs and EMUs in the North West (ignoring Cumbria which would probably have got Pacers anyway.)  However, the government forced 142s and 150s on them.

Yorkshire seemed happy with Pacers as at the time they came in to service the ECML wasn't electrified and the Penistone line and Settle-Carlisle line were at risk of closure so Pacers were better than no trains.

Centro managed to negotiate a deal to get all Sprinters and no Pacers.
