Title: One for the Fare wizards ;-) Post by: bigdaz on October 04, 2011, 21:39:06 The wife, my daughter and I are travelling from Farnborough to Worthing on Sunday 24th Oct and then returning on Monday 25th Oct but need to stop at Brighton on the way back.
Intention is to travel from Farnborough to Southampton and then along the coast on the Sunday; then return via Brighton (break of journey) and East Croydon, Clapham on the return. I have a network card and friends and family railcard. The cheapest I can find is ^47 for three Off Peak returns. Can anyone come up with a cheaper way? I can leave Worthing for Brighton after 10am on Monday morning and look to return from Brighton at around 18h00. Thanks! Title: Re: One for the Fare wizards ;-) Post by: Brucey on October 04, 2011, 21:53:43 What fare exactly is the ^47 one? I can't seem to find anything for that sort of price.
The cheapest SVR is ^31, so even with railcards (etc.) I can't get to ^47 ??? Title: Re: One for the Fare wizards ;-) Post by: bigdaz on October 04, 2011, 22:03:34 I get Three off-peak returns (route NOT London) at ^46.80 with FAM railcard (Southern Mixing Desk)
Title: Re: One for the Fare wizards ;-) Post by: Brucey on October 04, 2011, 22:20:17 Sorry, my brain seems to have switched off today. I wasn't working out the discounts correctly!
2 Adults @^ 20.45 = ^ 40.90 1 Child @^ 5.90 = ^ 5.90 __________ ^ 46.80 I'm unable to find anything obviously cheaper. SN do a "Super Group 5" advance fare for ^15 each way between SOU-BTN and BTN-CLJ, but once you've added on the fares either side, it isn't cheaper. Title: Re: One for the Fare wizards ;-) Post by: ChrisB on October 04, 2011, 22:25:15 Daysave tickets for two days?
Title: Re: One for the Fare wizards ;-) Post by: bigdaz on October 04, 2011, 22:29:02 Day save would be ^12 per adult per day (=^48) + 2 days at ^1 = ^50 without the additional fares of FNB - SOU or CLJ - FNB !
Title: Re: One for the Fare wizards ;-) Post by: thetrout on October 05, 2011, 00:32:57 Don't Southern do Advance tickets between London Victoria and Brighton / Southampton...?! Might be worth a look
Title: Re: One for the Fare wizards ;-) Post by: ChrisB on October 05, 2011, 06:16:35 Day save would be ^12 per adult per day (=^48) + 2 days at ^1 = ^50 without the additional fares of FNB - SOU or CLJ - FNB ! I thought it was three adults? Title: Re: One for the Fare wizards ;-) Post by: Brucey on October 05, 2011, 07:09:58 Three adults would still be ^48, plus the cost of a return between FNB-SOU and CLJ-FNB.
Title: Re: One for the Fare wizards ;-) Post by: ChrisB on October 05, 2011, 08:25:07 I thought DaySave was per person?....so that would be ^36++? And when did it go up to ^12? It was a tenner last I knew!
Title: Re: One for the Fare wizards ;-) Post by: Brucey on October 05, 2011, 08:39:48 There is a Group DaySave, priced at the same as two adults, allowing 3 or 4 people to travel. Price increased (very quietly) to ^12 at least 6 months ago.
Title: Re: One for the Fare wizards ;-) Post by: ChrisB on October 05, 2011, 08:42:06 so wouldn't that be best for the OP?
Title: Re: One for the Fare wizards ;-) Post by: Brucey on October 05, 2011, 08:43:51 No, because they would still need a single between Farnborough and Southampton (which is ^16.10 just for a one adult single), plus Clapham Junction to Farnborough (^13.80 for one adult).
Title: Re: One for the Fare wizards ;-) Post by: ChrisB on October 05, 2011, 08:45:56 oh, ok, thanks.

Title: Re: One for the Fare wizards ;-) Post by: 6 OF 2 redundant adjunct of unimatrix 01 on October 05, 2011, 18:02:52 farnborough-brighton rt havant off peak rtns (fam card 2 adults 1 child) 42.30 will get you to worthing as a break in journey is valid and the service stops there.....on an off peak rtn you can complete your journey the next day aslong as you resume your journey before 1200 ... if its after then you will need a single from Worthing to Brighton anytime singles (fam card 2 adults 1 child) 7.90 which would bump the total to 50.20...
modified due to validity period on outbound section of off-peak return and following confirmation of validity of returning via clapham http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/ticketterms/show?&ticketTypeCode=SVR&ticketRestriction=5K&callingPage=/service/timesandfares/FNB/BTN/231011/1000/dep/241011/1000/dep#validity Title: Re: One for the Fare wizards ;-) Post by: bigdaz on October 05, 2011, 19:29:25 Quote farnborough-brighton rt havant off peak rtns (fam card 2 adults 1 child) 42.30 will get you to worthing ...but if Worthing is beyond Brighton on this route, then surely a ticket Farnborough Group - Brighton won't get me far enough... please clarify... Title: Re: One for the Fare wizards ;-) Post by: 6 OF 2 redundant adjunct of unimatrix 01 on October 05, 2011, 19:36:28 it depends which way you go doesnt it ;D if you go basingstoke-southampton-brighton then you pass threw and stop at worthing and can have a break there...but if you go via clapham then you are going over distance to get to worthing as you hit brighton first
Title: Re: One for the Fare wizards ;-) Post by: 6 OF 2 redundant adjunct of unimatrix 01 on October 05, 2011, 19:39:44 to be honest im pretty surprised that the tickets valid both ways! but ive checked it on a couple of sites the way out it threw up via basingstoke and the way back it gave me via clapham, for good measure i even forced each route to check if it was cheaper via a set route but both the same
