Title: Place the picture Post by: grahame on September 27, 2011, 21:36:58 It's quite a while since I posted a picture quiz. Can you identify these (some are easy, some are not)?. One go each at first please.

Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: bobm on September 27, 2011, 21:49:47 6 The SW Wales line on the approach to Wootton Bassett Junction?
Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: paul7575 on September 27, 2011, 21:50:12 4. Farringdon (new 'Y shaped' footbridge is the giveaway...)
Paul Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: grahame on September 27, 2011, 21:55:33 4.is indeed Farringdon. The other two aren't as stated / suggested.
Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: Chris from Nailsea on September 27, 2011, 22:02:50 Oh, no ... ::)
Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: grahame on September 27, 2011, 22:04:20 Oh, no ... ::) No, it isn't there, either ... Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: JayMac on September 27, 2011, 22:29:58 Just for a moment I thought one of them may've been that place......
;D Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: Louis94 on September 27, 2011, 22:32:08 3. Didcot Parkway
Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: inspector_blakey on September 27, 2011, 22:34:47 5. Chippenham.
Slightly embarrassingly, given the hours I must have spent at Didcot Parkway waiting for connecting trains to/from Oxford, I initially thought 3 was Westbury :-[ Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: Chris from Nailsea on September 27, 2011, 22:40:07 No need to rub it in ... ::)
Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: grahame on September 27, 2011, 22:40:29 Yes ... Didcot Parkway and Chippenham ...
The Didcot picture is slightly lacking in features .... Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: marky7890 on September 27, 2011, 22:42:52 8. Old Royal Albert Bridge Signal Box, North of St Budeaux, Plymouth.
Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: grahame on September 27, 2011, 22:46:15 8. Old Royal Albert Bridge Signal Box, North of St Budeaux, Plymouth. Yes, it is ... i wondered how easy or hard that one would be as it's not taken from a spot where passengers usually go. Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: Timmer on September 28, 2011, 06:08:18 7 is Norwich. I think I'm right in saying there isn't a picture of Taunton in this collection ;D
Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: grahame on September 28, 2011, 06:22:51 7 is Norwich. I think I'm right in saying there isn't a picture of Taunton in this collection ;D I'm afraid 7 isn't Norwich, but you're on the right lines. Your other statement is correct ;D Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: autotank on September 28, 2011, 09:20:32 0. Kentish Town?
Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: grahame on September 28, 2011, 09:52:21 0. Kentish Town? Again, on the right line(s) ... but not the right station.Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: Phil on September 28, 2011, 10:14:17 7. looks like Cambridge to me. Not sure if that caonpy's unique to Cambs, but I do recall admiring it several times on visits to that fair city.
Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: grahame on September 28, 2011, 12:13:04 7. looks like Cambridge to me. Not sure if that caonpy's unique to Cambs, but I do recall admiring it several times on visits to that fair city. I can see the similarity (and it's a good guess seeing as I'm in Cambridge at the moment) but I'm afraid it isn't. You *are* in the correct region and an ex-Great Eastern station. Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: smokey on September 28, 2011, 16:31:52 7 I reckon could be Stowmarket.
Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: grahame on September 28, 2011, 16:38:41 7 I reckon could be Stowmarket. Could have been .... but isn't. Gosh - are there really so many stations in East Anglia that look like this? Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: grahame on September 28, 2011, 21:07:34 There have been three close guesses ... one's less than a mile off, one just three stations out, and another very much on the right line. Feel free to have further educated guesses, anyone!
Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: JayMac on September 28, 2011, 21:26:37 Is 7. Manningtree?
Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: Chris from Nailsea on September 28, 2011, 21:29:21 There ought to be a handicap for use of Google Earth ... ::)
Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: grahame on September 29, 2011, 01:41:21 Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: JayMac on September 29, 2011, 04:26:35 There ought to be a handicap for use of Google Earth ... ::) Not guilty. :P As for Wikipedia and National Rail Enquiries, Ill plead the fifth..... ;D Oh, and remembering grahame made a trip to Harwich for the ferry some time back. Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: eightf48544 on September 29, 2011, 07:41:51 9 is somewhere with Stadler unit, note central power car, would say Germany but catenery doesn't look right.
Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: grahame on September 29, 2011, 08:03:26 9 is somewhere with Stadler unit, note central power car, would say Germany but catenery doesn't look right. You're in the wrong country - but closely bordering it ... There ought to be a handicap for use of Google Earth ... ::) Not guilty. :P As for Wikipedia and National Rail Enquiries, Ill plead the fifth..... ;D Oh, and remembering grahame made a trip to Harwich for the ferry some time back. I couldn't *quite* see how Google Earth would have helped. But now that we're 24 hours in, all's fare in sorting out the remaining pictures - two of which I had expected to go quite quickly ... very much FGW territory ... Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: eightf48544 on September 29, 2011, 12:04:50 Wonder if 9 is Holland. Arriva have 99 Stadler units running there!
Also wondered about Eastern Europe but there's not enough weed on the track! Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: grahame on September 30, 2011, 09:17:21 Yes ... No. 9 is indeed in Holland - it's Venlo, right on the German border in fact. To clear up some of the more difficult ones ... number 0 is Elstree and Borehamwood. And that leaves just no.s 2 and 6, both of which are in the heart of FGW territory so someone should know ;)
Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: Tim on September 30, 2011, 11:18:23 Is 2 and HST on diversion via the line between Chippenham and Westbury (you know the one that has a lousy service and some great supporters)
Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: grahame on September 30, 2011, 12:14:55 Is 2 and HST on diversion via the line between Chippenham and Westbury (you know the one that has a lousy service and some great supporters) Indeed ... it is. A London to Somewhere-in-the-South-West service has just left the London to Bristol via Bath line at Thingley junction, and is wending its way along the Swindon - Chippenham - Trowbridge - Westbury route. Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: thetrout on October 01, 2011, 23:09:07 Possibly stupid suggestions...
But I reckon 6 is either Westbury - taken from Slag Lane Bridge. Or Just North of Trowbridge, Where the junction for Melksham is ;) Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: grahame on October 02, 2011, 18:44:59 Possibly stupid suggestions... But I reckon 6 is either Westbury - taken from Slag Lane Bridge. Or Just North of Trowbridge, Where the junction for Melksham is ;) Neither of those (in fact an earlier answer was very close). As a further hint ... this location could indeed be very significant for the TransWilts; I took the photo on Sunday 25th September, late afternoon, risking life and limb to do so but not breaking any railway (or other) byelaws. Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: JayMac on October 12, 2011, 23:27:42 Has there been a correct answer for 6. yet?
Further clue? Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: signalandtelegraph on October 13, 2011, 07:36:28 6 is Hunts Mill road Wootton Bassett, signals coming from Chippenham direction. I can see why you took your life in your hands!
Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: grahame on October 13, 2011, 08:43:45 6 is Hunts Mill road Wootton Bassett, signals coming from Chippenham direction. I can see why you took your life in your hands! Yes, it is ... also known as the "Skew Bridges" on the A3102 from Wootton Bassett to Lyneham. The bridge over the South Wales line has a footpath on it ... which runs out just as the quite-busy road wriggles over the bridge over the Chippenham line. It's almost as if the footpath is waiting to lead down to platforms on either side of the line here - the line was originally broad gauge and there does appear to be space. A resited WB station here would allow TransWilts trains to stop clear of the South Wales line, so that they could be picking up passengers for Swindon and beyond while the express via Parkway roared past then follow it, and similarly they could be doing station duties on their way out from Swindon, leaving the South Wales line clear for a following express. TransWilts Rail commissioned studies have shown this to be within line capacity, even when looking at the trains with the slowest acceleration (153s and 125s) but measured against the service frequency planned for when electric trains are running. Title: Re: Place the picture Post by: bobm on October 13, 2011, 10:26:36 I was close then. Only been there the once - I went up to Wootton Bassett for the penultimate repatriation through RAF Lyneham and afterwards wallked along the road to the bridge.
