Title: Olympic Games Train Tickets Post by: Gordon the Blue Engine on September 24, 2011, 18:36:08 Just noticed that the FGW Home page has a plug for the Olympic Games and train travel thereto, but refers to them as the "Summer Games 2012". Nowhere is the word "Olympic" used. Why?
Title: Re: Olympic Games Train Tickets Post by: JayMac on September 24, 2011, 19:19:39 I suspect that it's just easier to refer to 'Summer Games 2012' instead of 'Olympic and Paralympic Games Summer 2012'
Certainly takes up less space! Title: Re: Olympic Games Train Tickets Post by: bobm on September 24, 2011, 19:31:51 ... or the Games of the XXX Olympiad. ;D
Title: Re: Olympic Games Train Tickets Post by: Ollie on September 25, 2011, 03:22:26 Is it a trademark/copyright issue?
Even the official tickets website doesn't seem to say "Olympics" anywhere. Title: Re: Olympic Games Train Tickets Post by: ChrisB on September 25, 2011, 08:31:43 I doubt it! Surely the ticket sellers to tge Olympics would have permission to use it? More likely the suggestion about saving words is the reaaon?

Even the official tickets website doesn't seem to say "Olympics" anywhere. I believe it may be copyright, as p&o wanted to name their new ferries at dover Olympic related names and the I.o.c challenged this as breach of their copyrights Title: Re: Olympic Games Train Tickets Post by: ChrisB on September 25, 2011, 09:12:13 But the IOC can't possibly object to their ticket office using the name!

More likely the suggestion about saving words is the reaaon? Fgw are not official ticket sellers, they are just selling their normal train tickets which coincides with the timings if the Olympics, therefore they probably do not have correct privileges to use trademarked, or copyrighted wordingTitle: Re: Olympic Games Train Tickets Post by: ChrisB on September 25, 2011, 12:26:15 The posts above referred to the "official tickets wdbsite" as did I
Title: Re: Olympic Games Train Tickets Post by: LiskeardRich on September 25, 2011, 12:39:45 The posts above referred to the "official tickets wdbsite" as did I The original references saying it as summer games are just referring to fgw page, only Ollie made reference to official site, so perhaps making your posts clearer would help please? Title: Re: Olympic Games Train Tickets Post by: ChrisB on September 25, 2011, 13:23:32 Richard, your first post even quoted the "official Ticket website"
Can't really be any clearer, sorry Title: Re: Olympic Games Train Tickets Post by: LiskeardRich on September 25, 2011, 13:52:48 I assumed the post I quoted was referring to fgw train tickets for Olympics as that was what the rest of this thread was in reference to (barring ollies post). Quite clearly not that clear after all!
Title: Re: Olympic Games Train Tickets Post by: ChrisB on September 25, 2011, 14:13:04 But it was Ollie's post you quoted - so it is fair to assume you were posting on the same thing!
Enough, back to the topic.... Title: Re: Olympic Games Train Tickets Post by: LiskeardRich on September 25, 2011, 14:29:14 But it was Ollie's post you quoted - so it is fair to assume you were posting on the same thing! Enough, back to the topic.... Sorry hadn't realised I'd quoted the wrong post to what I intended. Anyway I have looked further online and only the I.o.c are permitted to use the official words, there copyright also includes official third party ticket sellers......absolutely ridiculous I'm sure can be agreed Title: Re: Olympic Games Train Tickets Post by: JayMac on September 25, 2011, 14:58:06 It appears Ollie was right. It is a trademark/copyright issue.
Olympic Symbol etc. (Protection) Act 1995 (http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1995/32/introduction) London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Act 2006 (http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2006/12/section/32) My reading of the Acts is that we here are fine using variations of the 'O' word and combinations of words such as 'London' and '2012' as we do so in a non-commercial way. I suspect ATOC have not paid for the privilege of having IOC symbols and protected words associated with the product (train tickets) they are selling.
