Update: delays caused after woman is struck and killed by train

Trains from Portsmouth and Southampton to Brighton were cancelled and delayed as a result of a woman being struck and killed by a train.

British Transport Police (BTP) were called to the line at Southwick railway station at about 6.29am on Thursday, September 8, following reports that a woman had been struck by a train.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

A BTP spokeswoman said: ^BTP and officers from Sussex Police attended the incident, which was reported to police at 6.29am, and is currently being treated as non-suspicious. Paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service also attended, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are currently working to establish the identity of the woman, and to inform her next of kin. A file will be prepared for the coroner.^

The line was handed back to Network Rail at 7.50am

The train involved was the 5.53am Littlehampton to London Bridge service.

Commuters from Worthing to Shoreham needed to get replacement buses while the incident was being dealt with.
