Title: Falmouth Docks Fire - 17 June 2011
Post by: RailCornwall on June 17, 2011, 09:11:18
Inevitable closure of Falmouth Docks station as a result ....

Explosions and fire reported at Falmouth Docks

Acetylene cylinders either on fire or at risk of being ignited. Emergency crews are dealing with a large fire at a dockyard in Cornwall where there have been reports of explosions involving gas cylinders.

Plumes of black smoke have been seen rising from Falmouth Docks, during what has been described by firefighters as a "major incident".

there is a 1/4 mile exclusion zone in place, the flats beside the station have been evacuated, could they not turn the services back at falmouth town?

Aren't HMRI very touchy about turning back trains at stations without signals even if it's single line and the train is already in the single line section.

Otherwise Falmouth Town would be obvious turnabck point.

There are no signals beyond Penryn, its a one train no token system I think. Falmouth Town is now being used for turning trains around.

i've just been down to nearby, trying to pick a friend up from the Falmouth Hotel, which is just outside the exclusiong zone, but the car park entrance is within the exclusion. A network rail car and van were ahead of me and were allowed through the police block. why would they be required?

please see falmouth packet website, for many pictures of the incident, within the live updates story. sorry cant post link as i am accessing via my mobile.

just a little after though having re-read the thread, what use would road transport be, as neither passengers, train or bus can access within 1/4 mile of the station?

Interestingly when those cylinders caught fire under the M1 in London the government announced it was considering banning such things close to motorways.

There've been a fair few cylinders close to railways but no one has suggested a ban there.

although you cant at the moment as the police wont let you through the exclusion cordon, you can only go about 50metres from falmouth town towards docks before hitting the cordon!

These trains had orignally been posted as terminating / starting from Falmouth Town. They have been revised to run as normal as the line is now open.

It was filmed by a freelance reporter, who was in Falmouth for another event, he rushed to the scene and got the video prior to the cordon being established.

In that case, surely something like

"This train is now running as scheduled"

would be far better?.....

All messages displayed on the website (Journey Check  / Live Updates) are subject to preset reasons that are listed on the Tyrell system (Nexus Alpha system). Free text can not be used for this section. However in this case perhaps the reason "re-instated" should have been used but this is normally used for cancelled trains that are re-instated.

Title: Re: Falmouth Docks Fire - 17 June 2011
Post by: ChrisB on June 18, 2011, 16:56:08
Yes, I've noticed just how restrictive those Tyrell-reasons are!

Reinstated, in this instance, would have been better - even anyone seeing those trains listed for the first time would realise they were running as timetabled. Coming across 'Revised' for the first time immediately makes you think something *has* changed, when in fact, yes it had, but is ok now.

Completely the opposite meaning to a first-timer, in fact.
