A woman has died after a fire broke out on a train travelling from Northampton to London.

The blaze is believed to have started in a toilet on the London Midland railways train at about 1705 BST on Monday.

The train stopped at Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, and all passengers were taken off. As a precaution electricity was turned off on overhead power lines.

Bedfordshire fire service and British Transport Police were at the scene.

A spokeswoman for British Transport Police said the woman had suffered burn injuries.

No other people were believed to have been involved in the incident, said the spokeswoman.

London Midland railways have warned passengers to expect major delays on the line.

Woman dead in commuter train fire drama

A rail passenger was killed when a fire broke out in a toilet of a commuter train this evening.

Another passenger alerted the conductor to the blaze on the London-bound train which occurred at around 5pm.

The train was operated by the London Midland train company and had left Northampton at 4.25pm.

It pulled into nearby Leighton Buzzard station in Bedfordshire where the other passengers alighted safely. No one else was hurt.

Woman is killed in blaze on train

A woman burned herself to death inside a toilet cubicle today aboard a packed commuter train, police believe.

The horrific scene was discovered soon after 5pm as the driver of the London-bound service slammed the brakes on as it approached Leighton Buzzard station in Bedfordshire.

The 43-year-old had been travelling with friends when she disappeared into the cubicle and torched herself.

Sources said she doused herself with some kind of 'accelerant' to ensure the fire took hold.

The source said: "An accelerant had been used and it was on her."

British Transport Police are probing the tragedy and arrangements were made to move the train to sidings to continue a forensic examination.

The 4.25pm Northampton to London Euston service was being operated by London Midland. All other passengers were evacuated and trains from Euston were cancelled until around 7pm as overhead power lines had been switched off after the incident.

It crippled part of one of the country's busiest rail links, the West Coast Mainline, and badly affected Virgin commuter services.

A BTP spokesman said: "A fire was reported inside a toilet cubicle on a train at 5.07pm.

"The deceased woman had injuries consistent with burns. No other person is believed to have been involved in the incident. It is not being treated as an accident."

All four rail lines were initially closed.

A London Midland spokesman said: "The fire appeared to have been in the toilet. A passenger reported the fire to a conductor. All the other passengers got off safely."
