Title: Special Oyster Cards
Post by: Ollie on April 01, 2011, 01:40:12
Limited Edition Royal Wedding Oyster Cards

From w/c 18th April stations that dish out Oyster Cards will have 2 types, the usual blue one, and a special Limited Edition Royal Wedding Oyster card.

Also if you plan to get an Oyster card from the 18th April you will need to specifically request a blue one if you do not want the limited edition one. Staff are being instructed to give the limited edition version by default.

I'm not aware of when they will stop being produced but it will definitely be up until the 29th April.

Oh good grief .... you'll be telling us that it's sometimes cheaper to buy your ticket in two halves than a through one for your whole journey next  ;D

It's true, alright - I too saw the briefing earlier this week.

They will be sold until they run out - all Oysterised stations have been supplied....when they're gone, they're gone. Same deposit applies.

Well, it would actually make sense if they were available only up until, and including, the wedding day itself?....

From the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-13333102):

Royal wedding: special edition Oyster card nets ^2m

Transport for London (Tfl) has sold 200,000 special edition royal wedding Oyster Cards, bringing in ^2m.

The electronic smartcard used on London's public transport system features a portrait of the couple and the wedding date of 29 April 2011.

The ^10 cost of the cards is made up of ^5 credit and ^5 deposit.

The deposit is refundable but it is thought most people will keep them as souvenirs, meaning TfL will not have to give the money back.

However, the special edition cards have not sold out with 550,000 still available.

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said the commemorative Oyster card was a "fabulous memento" of the wedding for both Londoners and visitors.

A TfL spokesperson said: "The limited edition Royal Wedding Oyster card has been extremely popular and almost 200,000 cards have been sold so far. This commemorative card will continue to be available while stocks last and can be purchased from any London Underground and London Overground station, some National Rail ticket offices and TfL Travel Information Centres."

The cards were launched in 2003 and now have more than seven million users.
