Title: Reassurance Needed
Post by: clevedonian on March 20, 2011, 16:25:03
I have basically just had to call the Police to Yatton station becasue their was children running back and forwards across the line, and were not looking out for trains. They were also sat on the platform edges with legs dangling over, and moved only when the train came in.

The Police did come very quickly but the fast non-stop train scared them off before the Police came.

Did I do the right thing calling the police??

Yes you did do the right thing. Pity the police didn't get  hold of these stupid children and take them back to their parents.

If you hadn't called whats to say that they wouldn't have gotten hit by a train, thus causing delays to passengers and costing network rail & the train operators money as well as wasting a young life or lives

Slightly off topic I do think that the BTP etc need to take a more hardline approach to this and start  finning the parents of these children as  well as taking legal action against the estate's of those people who decide to throw themselves under trains ( This may put some people off  ending their lives this way if they know that their families are likely to suffer)   i am sure they do something like this in the USA

Short answer: "Yes - you did the right thing"

Longer answer: "Yes - you did the right thing.  It looked like there was a situation with significant risk, and you couldn't be sure that someone else would have already called.   Just think how you would have felt had you not called and then there had been an accident."

Yes: thank you, clevedonian - you did exactly the right thing.

The fact that the police attended so quickly shows that they do take such reports very seriously - and this forum has already seen some topics which were started because a child was killed on the track.

I'll be raising this latest example of 'children dicing with injury or death' with my contacts at British Transport Police, and hopefully they'll be liaising with the local schools in Yatton: anything that will help to get the safety message across will be welcome.

Thanks again,

Chris from Nailsea.
