Title: Trains around Reading disrupted by gas cylinder fire - 28 Feb 2011
Post by: Chris from Nailsea on February 28, 2011, 12:38:06
From the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-12596500):

Quote
Train services around Reading in Berkshire have been disrupted by a fire involving a gas cylinder.

Crews were called to the Kennet Weir business park in Theale at 0923 GMT and a 200m (656ft) cordon was set up once it emerged the canister was ablaze.

The exclusion zone includes part of the railway line which has meant services between Reading and Westbury, via Newbury, have been suspended.

Police are evacuating nearby buildings and 30 firefighters are on the scene.

A specialist robot is being brought in from the London Fire Brigade which will be used remotely to view the cylinder and assess whether crews can attempt to extinguish the fire.

Train services to the west of England are being diverted around the area and will not call at any stations between Reading and Westbury.

Road replacement transport will operate between Reading and Bedwyn and Pewsey and Swindon.

Line problem between Reading and Newbury.
Train services are being disrupted due to a line-side fire between Reading and Newbury. Short notice alterations, cancellations and delays of up to 30 minutes can be expected. Train services are currently unable to pass Theale. Replacement road transport is in operation.

The railway line near to Unit two at Kennet View Business Park in Arrowhead Road, Theale, where the fire has broken out, has  been closed, as a 200 metre safety cordon has been thrown around the zone.
Aceytlene gas cylinders, which contain oxygen used for welding, have caught fire, and with explosive materials present, the firefighters, gathered from four forces, cannot approach the blaze in case of an explosion.

Aceytlene gas cylinders, which contain oxygen...

That's a distinctly odd  ??? statement - did you copy it from somewhere?

Acetylene cylinders themselves rarely contain oxygen, but one of their most common uses is for welding and cutting so they are often paired with oxygen cylinders. A pretty potent combination.

Even acetylene on it's own is not to be messed with:

200 metres doesn't seem nearly enough!

Caught out - courtesy of Newbury Today. I was on Arlington Business Park today by chance - but just outside the cordon. It didn't half cause some traffic congestion.
