Ran through catch points which are aimed down the embankment. Definitely better than running into an oncoming train... Or at the end of the double track before Cowden
At least it didn't seem to destroy any signalling equipment. I think they learnt their lesson when a freight SPAD the exit signal from the Up Ruscombe goods loop (no longer there) and demolished the local interlocking room! There have also been a couple of locos down the bank just before Wharncliffe viaduct from the Up goods loops East of Southall. You can still see the remaains of the ramp bulldozed to pull them back up. I've wondered about the layout just south of Botley where the line singles. Viewed from Botley station you'd expect a run through would take out a DC substation, the alignment seems just right...
