Fast train is a boost for business and tourism

A group of Torquay schoolchildren were today helping to launch of a new morning train service out of London, which it is hoped will help boost business in Torbay.

The first 7.06am service was due to set off from Paddington today heading for Paignton as First Great Western introduces its winter timetable improvements. The train will get people into Paignton 40 minutes earlier than at present.

The event will also mark the new 11.06am direct return leg of the journey.

Torbay MP, Adrian Sanders, will join the Class Four children from All Saints School, Babbacombe, at the station.

The children won a competition to come up with a name the new train, which will be called the Devon Express.

Invited guests will include Torbay Mayor Nick Bye, local councillors and members of the Torbay Rail Users Group, all of whom worked with First Great Western to secure the new service.

First Great Western managing director, Mark Hopwood said: "We are delighted to be able to introduce this early morning fast train, which will be a real benefit to the local economy, both for business and tourism.

"There has been an overwhelming response from across the region in support of it and we thank everyone for their support in making this happen."

Mr Sanders, who will be travelling on the service up to London, said: "I'm delighted to be able to join in the celebrations for these two new direct services, which are a boost for tourism and will provide more opportunities for those who do not wish to change trains when visiting the Torbay Riviera."

A spokesman for Torbay Line Rail Users Group said: "We are very pleased about the new service. This brings great opportunity to increase tourism in Torbay, that could benefit the economy and employment situation. There is already a morning train from Paddington to Torbay, and this extra service will be of benefit to tourists and others wanting to travel to London mid morning.

"The group has wanted a service like this for along time, and thank FGW for making this happen with the cooperation of others."

Doctor Roger Dixon, group vice-chairman, was the main link with FGW on the naming of the train.

He said: "We now have a good train service to Paddington, and from the tourism aspect we must make the most of it. Many in London do not have a car, so this is a golden opportunity to attract visitors for all the year. We cannot just expect tourists to visit Torbay, there is the need to get out there and make it happen."

Or more appropriately; http://www.thisissouthdevon.co.uk/news/Fast-train-boost-business-tourism/article-2996936-detail/article.html ;)

Interesting that said service is booked a rather leisurely 25 minutes to do Newton Abbot - Paignton.

Perhaps i'm just getting old and cranky, not far from hitting 30  :-\, but i'm sure my 3 year old niece could have come up with something more original to win a competition than "The Devon Express".

Oddly enough, I'm only 18 months from hitting 30 and I was thinking exactly the same thing!

It is a bit of a crappy name, for starters it's hardly an express train...

Perhaps tactfully, the Herald doesn't say how many other entries there were ...  ::)

At least no-one spend thousands of pounds on employing a firm of media-luvvy brand consultants to come up with that name  ;D

Has anyone travelled on this service? What are the loadings like? Has it taken much away from the 07.30 PAD-PNZ?
