Title: Another isolated DMU operation
Post by: Richard Fairhurst on November 26, 2010, 14:26:46
An entirely speculative post... but looking at a map got me thinking about this one.

With Newbury becoming the limit of electrification, at least for a while, there'll need to be some continued provision for Kintbury, Hungerford and Bedwyn.

It may be as sensible to serve these stations with a Sprinter from the reallocated 'West' fleet, which already work to Westbury, than with a Turbo from the much reduced Thames Valley fleet based over in Reading.

So: a new DMU shuttle service Newbury-Westbury. Wonder where else that could be extended to...?

Hi, Richard ... I would have said it would be likely to still be a turbo rather than a sprinter, but with the displaced turbos moved to St Philip's Marsh, so it would be "The West Fleet".   Extended - let's see - perhaps Frome (Market Place) and Radstock  ;)  .. or Dilton Marsh, Warminster and Salisbury, running every 2 hours and with a Swindon - Salisbury on the other hour, providing DHM with an hourly service. You may think of other options too!
