Title: Classic typo quiz
Post by: Chris from Nailsea on November 12, 2010, 02:12:17
Now, I know I've publicised quite a few pictures here, featuring some rather odd spelling in FGW posters, but while they continue to catch my eye, I shall continue to do so.  ::)

Here's the latest example - but, just to make this a real challenge (rather than just pointing out the bleeding obvious typographical error!) - can anyone identify the FGW station ticket office in which I took this particular picture?

Not really a typo but amused me.

That's a new one on me - demanding that all pushchairs be folded (incidentally, what's the difference between a pushchair and a buggy? I thought they were synonymous so there's another error!) in a ticket office? I can see why, if there's limited space, things could get crowded, but given the trouble bus drivers have asking pushchair users to fold them if there's a wheelchair user on-board I can't see too many parents acceding to that request!

Not a typo either. But can anyone tell me what is wrong with this picture for the Club 55 Advert??

The stylised Turbostar's windscreen is the wrong way round. The larger window should be on the right. (Left-hand side from drivers POV)

Correct BNM ;D

But also, is it worth noting that FGW don't operate Turbostars?! Making the poster looking like they advertise a train that they don't even operate...??

Or am I being really picky again...?? ;D :D ;)

Yes, picky.  ;) :D

Club 55 is offered across all First Group TOCs, so that could be a TransPennine Express or ScotRail Turbostar.

Not quite as bad as one of the early FGW magazines which was talking about Swindon Steam and had a Southern loco at the top.

Not Southern UK eg a MN/WC but a Southern USA pacific!

The perils of clip art to uninitiated.

There's a steam loco that's a very good likeness of an LNER B1 that must be in clipart somewhere, because it makes pretty frequent appearences on anything train-related too.

Come on then Chris, time for a clue as to the loacation of the poster in the OP...

Hmm.  ::)

The trouble is, I can't think of a clue that wouldn't give it away immediately!

It's at a station where a rogue 'e' sometimes appears, in the name of the town itself.  :o

Aha, would that be Bridg(e)water then?

Yeas!  ;D

(The poster is to the right of the door from the ticket office onto the platform.)

Shouldn't think the locals would notice.

I had the misfortune to live in that town for a couple of years from 1999 to 2001 - not an experience I wish to repeat. I managed to escape to North Petherton eventually. Maybe a bit of snobbery on the part of myself and my peers, as we were raised in Taunton, but we always referred to Bridgwater as the Beirut of Somerset.

Pushcahairs may well be a problem there, Bilgewater does appear to be the single-mum capital of Somerset.

Two things I learnt during my time in Bridgy (I still get shivers when I'm reminded of it): The best thing to come out of the place was the A38, and the pigeons fly upside down over the town, cos it ain't worth cr*pp*ng on!

You may get the impression I don't like Bridgwater.

Would be interested to hear your opinions on Highbridge  :D

Aaahh.... Highbridge (bignosemac goes all misty eyed as the memories flood back.)

Rather fond of Highbridge. During my time exiled in Bilgewater I was courting a young lady from Highbridge, so I have very fond memories. She had a flat, I had a bedsit, so I often got on me bike and cycled up the A38. In the summer we'd cycle about the Somerset Levels, stop for picnics and spoon.... and, on one memorable occasion, fork.

Hmm.  'Bridge over Troubled Water' - what a rubbish clue that was!  ::) :o

Anyway: this morning, finding myself at Weston super Mare Station, needing to while away some time due to my 09:05 from NLS to Taunton being cancelled >:(, I noted there a variation on the wording of the original poster which started this topic:

(http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/4650/007xy.jpg) (http://img10.imageshack.us/i/007xy.jpg/)

While the original error has been corrected, the additional wording now includes a further typo (and some rather dodgy punctuation).

Sorry to seem picky, but does anyone at FGW proof-read these posters, before they are approved for publication?

CfN  ::)

...and not the first time you've spotted that exact same typo, Chris.

Aha, would that be Bridg(e)water then?

Ahh, yes the delights of Bridgewater :o

Taking the ladies home on the last (ladies as in ladies of the night) Some interesting offers of payment made to the conductor on occasions.
In the last few years, plenty of chavs and as mentioned very young looking single mums (asking for child tickets).
And don't forget the sad trainspotter who has been reported by the Exeter drivers for being on the platforms for the Penzance sleepers.
Still trying to work out which station is the worse, Bridgewater or Turdbridge?

slightly off topic, but related to your posters, whats the policy with small babies that cant sit on a seat and would be best left in the pushchair to sleep etc during the journey? couldnt be expected to hold a baby for a long journey? and our pushchair would be more practical left unfolded, as folded its in 3 pieces, try carrying that in pieces and a small baby onto train/

Fair question, richwarwicker.  :)

On my train back into Bristol today, I saw exactly that situation: at TAU, a mother put an admittedly small pushchair, with child asleep 'in situ', on board a 150, in the open area just inside the doors.

No problem - that pushchair took up no more floor area than a suitcase, or a folding bicycle.

I think what FGW are more concerned about are those buggies which seem to be engineered on the lines of a Nissan Navara ...  ::) ;D
