Title: Pullman Dining 1960's style! Post by: JayMac on October 25, 2010, 08:58:28 Just found this fascinating document whilst trawling The Railway Archives (http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/index.php) looking for something completely different!
http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/documents/BRWR_Pullman1960.pdf A full technical description of the 'Blue Pullman' rolling stock, the routes it travelled, along with timetables, fares and the ^ la Carte menu. Quite an impressive menu as well; top nosh which could be accompanied by fine wine, a selection of apertifs and spirits and finished with a Havana cigar! Title: Re: Pullman Dining 1960's style! Post by: eightf48544 on October 25, 2010, 11:05:33 I certainly travelled on the Western Blue Pullman to Bristol I think. Unfortuantely i was in the powercar which unlike the HSTs had seating. A bit noisy I seem remember.
The best pullmans IMO were the loco hauled ones used on the West Coast (all First) to Manchester) and on the East Coast I think to Leeds. Travelled on both. Title: Re: Pullman Dining 1960's style! Post by: IndustryInsider on October 25, 2010, 11:32:34 top nosh which could be accompanied by fine wine, a selection of apertifs and spirits and finished with a Havana cigar! Or for the slightly less discerning, a can of Skol! Nice link BMN - there's literally thousands of interesting documents to be found on that site. Some of the accident investigations (pre 'Black Boxes') make fascinating reading. Title: Re: Pullman Dining 1960's style! Post by: JayMac on October 25, 2010, 18:58:55 Or for the slightly less discerning, a can of Skol! I'm sure this was the height of sophistication back in 1960: (http://i598.photobucket.com/albums/tt68/bignosemac/skol.jpg) ;D ;D ;D Title: Re: Pullman Dining 1960's style! Title: Re: Pullman Dining 1960's style! Post by: welshman on October 25, 2010, 21:14:47 I can claim a South Wales Pullman journey from Cardiff to Paddington which must have been in the early 1960s as part of a treat trip to London - Science Museum/Tower etc etc. I will have to ask the aged P but I reckon that must have been 1962 or so.
I am, as they say, in an old situation. I think this is the dementia smiley - ??? - (all together now) but I can't remember. Title: Re: Pullman Dining 1960's style! Post by: JayMac on October 25, 2010, 21:52:50 Well, I'm far too young to have experienced any British Railways/British Rail Pullmans, but FGW's offering is, just about, keeping the tradition alive.
The food is still excellent, as is the service, but I fear it is not long for this world. Title: Re: Pullman Dining 1960's style! Post by: inspector_blakey on October 25, 2010, 22:20:42 I'd always been led to believe that this stuff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watney_Combe_%26_Reid#Watneys_Red_Barrel) was the height of sophistication in the 1960s and 1970s...!
