15. Newton Abbot? Had an hour and a bit break there during my HST training for a pasty!

Title: Re: A bumper picture quiz.
Post by: JayMac on October 14, 2010, 03:41:25
rts... not sure whether that was a guess, seeing as TJ has already correctly identified 15 as Newton Abbot. It appears that someone has nicked the 'House' from the end of that canopy sign. It is indeed a close up of the awning above the entrance to 'South Devon House' aka Newton Abbot station main building.

Feel free to have a guess of another pic.  ;)

Oh, and... 'HST training for a pasty'. Is that what you get if you pass?  ;D

Correctamondo, blakey. Reward yourself one bland American lager!

Why would drink fizzy p*sswater like Coors or Budweiser when I could have a nice beer from one of Philly's many great local breweries...?

Yes, I know, it came as a surprise to me too that there was decent beer this side of the pond  ;D

Lol, I hadn't actually spotted TJs post. The pasty was self-funded fuel for the run back up to Birmingham.

I was standing next to bignosemac when he took picture 8 - it's in a pedestrian underpass at a railway station, but not anywhere in Cornwall!

CfN.  ;)

Correct. That just leaves number 3.

Title: Re: A bumper picture quiz
Post by: inspector_blakey on October 15, 2010, 19:58:59
Tricky one that. Almost looks like it could be third-rail electrified but I don't think it's quite right for that. At least partly because it looks like it might be some kind of narrow gauge or model track. All of which makes me none the wiser!

Title: Re: A bumper picture quiz

You are getting warm.....

Title: Re: A bumper picture quiz
Post by: JayMac on October 16, 2010, 20:52:23
I guess folks need a clue for the final unanswered pic (No. 3)

It's 3rd rail.....

Title: Re: A bumper picture quiz
Post by: inspector_blakey on October 16, 2010, 21:00:06
In which case, as a wild guess, somewhere around Portsmouth Harbour (where the track is definitely unballasted and elevated, from memory you can look straight down at the sea from the platform). But I really don't think it looks right for that.

Title: Re: A bumper picture quiz
Post by: JayMac on October 17, 2010, 01:13:37
A very wild guess, blakey, but you are (sort of) on the right coastline.....

Title: Re: A bumper picture quiz
Post by: inspector_blakey on October 17, 2010, 04:27:34
OK then, with the benefit of (a) the realization that third rail and narrow gauge are not necessarily mutually exclusive, (b) a clue from you good self, and (c) me remembering that you went to Brighton on your travels, how about the Volk's Electric Railway? Although that has a few different stations and I really don't know which one of them it might be!

Title: Re: A bumper picture quiz
Post by: JayMac on October 17, 2010, 04:44:09
Well, number 3 was the deliberate difficult one seeing as it wasn't a picture of a particular station. But then I thought the night shot of a 158 (Number 13) would also prove difficult, at least for CfN!!

Well done blakey. The shot of the track on the Volk's Electric Railway was taken a few yards west of Aquarium station:

Incidentally, I couldn't travel on the world's oldest still operating electric railway on the day I was in Brighton as it was closed down until Easter 2011. Was, however, able to buy a '99' from Aquarium Station!

Correct answers. Well done to all who took part.
