Title: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 02, 2010, 21:28:45
Thought it was about time I did one of these. These are photos, which happen to contain transport, of travels in the last 4 years (since I went digital).

Not sure how hard/easy it will be. None are in FGW area. Some are close, other not so.

Usual rules please, etc.

One clue: none of the pictures are Melksham (sorry!)

Here is 1 to 4 of 16!

Number 4 looks a bit like Pickering to me ???

Title: Re: Where was I?

3. Crossing the Usk near Newport?

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 02, 2010, 22:41:51
No 4 Correct.

No 3 Wrong, but warm.

Title: Re: Where was I?

I cry foul - anywhere warm to newport is FGW area even if not stations operated by FGW

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 02, 2010, 22:49:15
Depends on my definition of warm! ;D

Are we crossing a river in Wales?

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: inspector_blakey on September 02, 2010, 22:55:05
1 is bugging me because I'm sure I've been there but I can't place it. I think, putting together the mark I, the semaphore and the camping coach that it's on a heritage line somewhere. I was thinking maybe the WSR but the maroon stock has put me off that idea.

NYMR definitelty has camping coaches at Goathland, which would fit with the Pickering photo. Only problem is that the photo definitely isn't Goathland. But it just might be Levisham...

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 02, 2010, 23:11:41
Hang on, I've just realised that No. 3 may be misleading. The picture was not taken onboard a train, nor from a bridge.

However, River and Wales are correct.

No. 1 is not Levisham.

Let's have some clues (cryptic if you like) for the three remaining unguessed before you post more!  :P :D

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 03, 2010, 17:34:01
Ok, 1 is in Shropshire, 2 is in Cardiff and 3 is in Sardinia.

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: JayMac on September 03, 2010, 18:07:19
The 2nd pic is in Cardiff? Methinks you got 'em the wrong way round....

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 03, 2010, 18:21:39
No, it's the new Welsh Assembly airport shuttle - every 15 mins with a restaurant. :P

Yes - reverse them! (and it hasn't even been "one of those days!") ::) ::)

Title: Re: Where was I?

Btline. Can I ask that you don't post such witty rejoinders for me to read just as I'm inhaling from my cigarette. I very nearly coughed up a lung. <giggle, cough, splutter>

Now, where did I put those screen wipes?  ;D

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: inspector_blakey on September 03, 2010, 19:09:26
OK, so number 1 is most likely on the Severn Valley Railway then...so if it's in Shropshire that would make it Highley or Hampton Loade (pretty sure it's not Bridgnorth, and the rest of the stations on the line aren't in Shropshire).

Hampton Loade?

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 03, 2010, 19:38:18
Yes, Hampton Loade. Suppose the clue gave it away, but I couldn't think of a better one, let alone a cryptic!

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: amiddl on September 03, 2010, 20:16:57
For number 3 - one of the Train Verde with a guess you travelled in the North of the Island and the picture was taken somewhere between Nulvi and Palua.

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 03, 2010, 22:19:53
Near enough!

Photo is the Old Time Train to Gallura, from Arzachena to Tempio Pausania at the half way stop at the Lake Liscia.

Now just the near Cardiff photo to sort out!

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: devon_metro on September 03, 2010, 22:26:37
Is the Cardiff photo somewhere near Cardiff Bay, I know there is water down there  :D

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: inspector_blakey on September 03, 2010, 22:37:59
Are we sure it's definitely Cardiff? It almost looks like the view from the right-hand side of a train heading into Swansea from the east, as you cross over the Towy with the White Rock stadium on the left. Although that wouldn't really qualify as outside FGW territory in my book.

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 03, 2010, 23:31:18
Indeed it is taken from a flat in Cardiff Bay, the line is the one to Penarth.

Here's the next four:

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: JayMac on September 04, 2010, 07:36:39
The third one looks like a northern mill town. Huddersfield?

.

Title: Re: Where was I?

No 8 must be Wimbledon!

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: inspector_blakey on September 04, 2010, 18:18:08
Is the first pic (labelled as number 2) Kidderminster SVR?

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: paul7575 on September 04, 2010, 18:18:21
No 8 must be Wimbledon!

Southfields.   :D

In true railway tradition, Wimbledon and Wimbledon Park are not near the tennis...  :o

Paul

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 04, 2010, 18:46:54
Kidderminster and Southfields correct. Glad to see someone fell into the Wimbledon trap (why I blacked out the TfL signs and advert).

PS: The reason the pics are labelled differently, is that I've changed the order I've uploaded them (to avoid having two SVR pics in one bloc).

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: inspector_blakey on September 05, 2010, 05:16:04
No.5 looks vaguely Italian but I don't really have the first clue where it might be.

The viaduct to the right of number 6 is making me start to wonder if it might be Durham although that's a bit of a long shot - think I can see OLE on the bridge though. Which might make it somewhere in the Aire Valley if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 05, 2010, 17:14:01
Durham correct - taken from the cathedral tower.

But not Italy.

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 06, 2010, 21:13:04
No5 is Istanbul.

Here are the next 4.

No 11 Gare du Nord

Paul

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Tim on September 07, 2010, 09:14:31
I think number 10 might be Gare de Nord as well (from the opposeite direction)

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: smokey on September 07, 2010, 17:37:50
No 12 Bamber Bridge?

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 07, 2010, 18:30:29
Gurd du Nord correct for No 11 only.

No 12 wrong.

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: plymothian on September 07, 2010, 23:29:16
10  Gare de l'Est from Rue d'Alsace?

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 08, 2010, 00:33:48
Correct. Just the other two now.

Clue: The train in No12 has come from Newcastle Central. There is a castle a few miles away.

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: JayMac on September 08, 2010, 01:45:59
12. That'd be Prudhoe then!

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 08, 2010, 16:10:01
Correct. Was that clue making it too easy? I thought many stations on lines around Newcastle had castles nearby! The actual destination nameplate of the train reads Hexham - but I thought this would make it way too easy.

Clue: The other picture has a wear nearby.

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: JayMac on September 08, 2010, 23:55:04
Wos a 'wear'? :)

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: inspector_blakey on September 08, 2010, 23:58:33
It's a river in't north east - goes through Barnard Castle and other places, innit? Although I suppose strictly speaking that's a Wear rather than a wear. Then again in Barny there is also, if my memory serves me correctly, a weir on the Wear. With dippers.

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: JayMac on September 09, 2010, 00:04:40
Canny man. I divvent nah wot btline wuz talkin aboot.  ;D

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: inspector_blakey on September 09, 2010, 02:45:38
I still don't. There's a very strong chance that it is actually a weir, rather than the Wear, being referred to!  ???

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 09, 2010, 21:39:21
Hmm, my clue kind of failed. Basically, the thing I wanted to communucate is that there is both a Wear and a weir near the remaining photo. I thought that putting Wear as "wear" might work (sorry TJ). But it didn't.

Suppose it explains why I failed to get a job with The Times crossword department... :P

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 09, 2010, 23:57:27
Ok, the final picutre was another of Durham. This time the station, again taken from the cathedral. Here are the FINAL 4 pics.

Title: Re: Where was I?

14. Newcastle upon Tyne.  I think.  (Well, it ain't Taunton, that's for sure!)  ;D

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: JayMac on September 10, 2010, 00:10:57
13. Wallsend. Tyne & Wear Metro station - with its station signs in English and Latin.

There is (or were) station posters of local facilities and businesses with their pictures digitally enhanced to show the business/service name in Latin. For instance a picture of the JobCentre has the translation, 'Forum Venalicium' (lit. 'slave market').

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 10, 2010, 00:13:00
Both are correct. Clue for final pics - taken in the same place, language spoken is Spanish.

Title: Re: Where was I?

Que?

Title: Re: Where was I?
Post by: Btline on September 12, 2010, 19:43:09
Answer: final pictures are Palma and Soller. Both in Majorca.

The end!
