Post by: thetrout on August 20, 2010, 21:34:28
Hi All,

I'm in need of some help. I need to get from Westbury - Southend & Victoria... However I wan't to avoid the Underground as much as possible. Is there a way I can get there without having to use the Underground??

Will be travelling on a Friday Evening, Returning very early Monday AM

Thanks :)

Confused....

Do you mean you are trying to get to Southend Central or Southend Victoria? Or do you want to travel to one and return from the other?

Having said that only feasible ways I can see are:

Westbury - Reading - Richmond (via Ascot) - Stratford (via Willesden Jcn) - Southend Victoria.

or

Westbury - Reading - Richmond - Stratford - Romford - Upminster - Southend Central.

or with a 3/4 mile walk:

Westbury - Reading - Acton Main Line (walk to) Acton Central - Stratford then as above.

Viable to take a bus between Pad or Waterloo and Fenchurch Street, rather than the underground...?

If bus acceptable Padd to Liverpool Street Bus 205 direct from Praed Street

TFL gives around 47 minutes for journey on a Friday evening, bus every 7-8 minutes.

Otherwise NL Line is best bet. If it was Southend Central you could add change Gospel Oak to Barking and have the pleasure of travelling on an ex Centro 150 on the Tottenham and Hampstead line.

Not sure how you get a fare though for using NL line . Your best bet might be an Oyster card to get across London and buy tickets to and from Boundary Zone 6. Bearing in mind your're travelling right across the whole zonal area and there is a timelimit to a single Oyster journey, you'll also need to make sure you check in and out at Zone 6 boundary  and when changing trains.

TFL Journey planner is pretty good at doing journeys like this provided you put in the right vias in and untick buses.

A valid through ticket marked with the + sign, 'via London', covers the NLL, indeed the NLL is still part of National Rail for ticketing purposes anyway. The only real difficulty is getting from Paddington onto the NLL without using LU, which is why I think Westbury to Clapham Jn has been suggested.

Cross London interchange with LO/LU/DLR services is available at a whole range of stations outside the inner zones, relevant to this question they'd include Richmond, Clapham Jn, Stratford, Barking.  The only theoretical proviso is that they are appropriate to the overall route - in this case the flow is west to east so NLL would be fine.

BTW eightf48544 Tickets are NOT available to 'boundary zone 6' from outside London.
