Title: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: Chris from Nailsea on August 14, 2010, 22:51:37 Here are some pictures from my latest day out. They are not in any particular order of travel, and while I haven't obscured anything within the photos, I have cropped a couple of them, just to omit 'spoiler' details!
May I ask that we please observe our usual rule: one guess each, for the first 24 hours - just to give everyone else a chance? Thanks! 1. Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: Chris from Nailsea on August 14, 2010, 22:59:54 Correct, mon brave! 12 is Taunton. ;D
There is a certain irony on that one, as grahame posted a picture of that very same platform ramp, albeit in a rather different configuration, in a previous quiz - and it caught me out (yet again!). C. ::) Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: JayMac on August 14, 2010, 23:05:54 I really should've used my guess on one of the others rather than bluddy Taunton! ::) :)
<stands on one leg, touches knee three times>* *A superstitious ritual that I now do each time that station features on the forum. Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: Chris from Nailsea on August 14, 2010, 23:10:01 Yes; in terms of tactics, I was rather startled when you answered that one first! ;D
Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: eightf48544 on August 15, 2010, 00:10:24 According to my GWR atlas 274 miles (no 6) is Bodmin Parkway.
Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: Chris from Nailsea on August 15, 2010, 00:16:22 Thanks, eightf48544! Actually, I assume you mean picture 5 - in which case, you are correct! ;)
Would you care to expand on your answer - in terms of what's in the background? Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: eightf48544 on August 15, 2010, 00:20:04 I assumme that it is Mark 1 in blood and custard belonging to the Bodmin and Wenford Railway.
In summer of 59 I had a footplte ride on a 45XX from Bodmin Road to Wadebridge. Running round in Bodmin (General). For a tiny station General seems a bit pretentious. Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: Chris from Nailsea on August 15, 2010, 00:22:06 Exactly that! ;) :D ;D
Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: jester on August 15, 2010, 07:31:48 Nos 2 and 11, Par, 8 Truro, 9 Lostwithiel, 10 Falmouth ??
Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: JayMac on August 15, 2010, 08:00:37 Referee? Foul!!
I make that 5 guesses from jester. :o ;D Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: plymothian on August 15, 2010, 08:25:01 6 Exeter St Davids
Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: super tm on August 15, 2010, 08:34:34 3 Taunton. The old bay platforms for trains coming from Minehead. Now for a bonus point if anyone can tell me what the little bit of fencing is for just above where the buffers would have been. Cant imagine what for.
Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: JayMac on August 15, 2010, 08:42:33 No idea on the fencing but surely that pic is a candidate for the Railway Eye (http://railwayeye.blogspot.com/search/label/2010%20Railway%20Garden%20Competition) Railway Garden Competition!
Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: smokey on August 15, 2010, 09:42:43 No 4 is Truro, more information, it's the masonary surpport of the Black footbridge that crosses over the West end of the platforms.
Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: eightf48544 on August 15, 2010, 11:29:13 Re Taunton concrete block and fencing.
Suggest it was a BR additon to get BRUTEs onto the mainline platform, does it lead to a gate? They could cut back the Minehead bay with short DMUS as runround niot required. Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: Chris from Nailsea on August 15, 2010, 11:43:46 Nos 2 and 11, Par, 8 Truro, 9 Lostwithiel, 10 Falmouth ?? Ahem! :o I'll accept your GroupSave of four answers: 2, 8, 9 and 11 - correct. What makes you less sure on number 10? 6 Exeter St Davids Correct. 3 Taunton. The old bay platforms for trains coming from Minehead. Correct. No 4 is Truro, more information, it's the masonary surpport of the Black footbridge that crosses over the West end of the platforms. Correct - excellent answer! ;) Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: smokey on August 15, 2010, 11:57:32 Can I have a Second go? I know number 7
Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: Chris from Nailsea on August 15, 2010, 12:00:53 I rather thought you might know that one! ;)
Yes, there's only a couple to go now, so second (or more) answers are now being taken. ;D Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: smokey on August 15, 2010, 12:04:52 5 = 7
Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: Chris from Nailsea on August 15, 2010, 12:08:29 Correct!
Just number 1 to go, now. Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: smokey on August 15, 2010, 12:12:16 Now as Bristol Temple Meads has Mile post of 118 1/2 and it's 8 miles (Zero chains) to Nailsea and 118+8 is 126 My guess is No 1 is your local (station)
Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: Chris from Nailsea on August 15, 2010, 12:16:07 Correct again! ;D
Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: jester on August 15, 2010, 17:28:45 Sorry about the multiple guesses..bit early this morning and wasnt paying attention... :-[ I thought the picture was the very new railings at Falmouth.
Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: Chris from Nailsea on August 15, 2010, 20:25:27 No problem, really, Jester: thanks for contributing! ;) :D ;D
And yes: those are the apparently very recently painted railings at Falmouth Town: (http://a.imageshack.us/img137/2829/032nf.jpg) (http://img137.imageshack.us/i/032nf.jpg/) Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: Ollie on August 15, 2010, 20:35:17 Thought the railings looked familiar.
Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: Chris from Nailsea on August 15, 2010, 20:41:33 Erm ... since when, Ollie, did you become an expert on the railings at Falmouth Town?? ::) :o ;D
Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: Ollie on August 15, 2010, 20:44:49 I collect pictures of railway fencing ;)
Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Cant imagine what for. Thanks, super tm: I, too, was rather puzzled as to what those railing-type things were. Here's another picture of them: (http://a.imageshack.us/img261/3083/166d.jpg) (http://img261.imageshack.us/i/166d.jpg/) Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! As my quiz pictures have all been answered correctly, I'd just like to offer my thanks to my travelling companion, on my 'grand day out' last Thursday. We went from Bristol Temple Meads to Falmouth Docks, on FGW trains - I'd like to offer our thanks to the various staff we met on our route, who were all very professional and friendly. (And, no: I'm not just saying that!) Just in case you haven't made the connection, by the way: my travelling companion that day has also posted some quiz pictures (http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=7375.0) from our journey. Thanks, Ollie! ;D CfN ;) :D ;D (http://a.imageshack.us/img152/7530/111k.jpg) (http://img152.imageshack.us/i/111k.jpg/) (http://a.imageshack.us/img90/4510/039zd.jpg) (http://img90.imageshack.us/i/039zd.jpg/) Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Post by: jester on August 16, 2010, 11:23:24 Just out of interest, the railings are replacements, getting rid of the ones with the nasty spiked tops.
Glad to hear you had a nice day out to Falmouth! ;) Title: Re: Chris - from Nailsea, to somewhere else, and back - all in a day! Glad to hear you had a nice day out to Falmouth! ;) And the railings with the Nasty Spiked tops were only installed in the past few years. I'd say about 1998-2000 More to the point NR STILL install spiked fences. Great when some Child climbs a tree and foolishly falls out. Now whats that about NR being OTT with Safety.
