A man is fighting for life in hospital after being hit by a train at a Hampshire level crossing this morning. The 21-year-old was struck shortly after 6.45am at the Chandlers crossing near Test Lane in Redbridge, Southampton. He was thrown clear of the train by the impact.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene and he has now been taken to Southampton General Hospital with what are described as ^life-threatening injuries^.

Police say they are not treating the incident as suspicious, and it is believed the man was on the crossing for some time before the train arrived.

Train services on the line, which runs between Southampton and Romsey on the main line to Bristol, were disrupted throughout the early morning, but were returned to normal after 8.10am.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: ^BTP officers were called to Chandlers occupational crossing on Old Redbridge Road in Redbridge, Southampton, this morning after a report of a man being struck by a train. BTP officers attended the incident, which was reported to police at 6.49am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious. Paramedics from the South Central Ambulance Service also attended and the man, a 21-year-old, was taken to hospital in Southampton with what are currently believed to be life-threatening injuries.^
