...... is it really necessary to have a big sign telling the driver what type of stock he's driving?

It was when Virgin operated the class 220 and 221s. 221 tilters were allowed to travel at EPS (enhanced permissable speeds) whereas the standard 220s were not. Now there's slight differences in the cab equipment and layout, but this was a quick reminder for the drivers. (I note the addition to the sign, which I would imagine means that it was on one of the sets transferred to CrossCountry which have their tilt equipment isolated.)
