Title: Combe 75th anniversary
Post by: willc on July 06, 2010, 00:20:54
Brace yourselves folks, it's the big one on Thursday - Combe station is 75 years old!

There are a few things going on to mark the occasion, including a party in the afternoon from 5.30pm to 6.30pm around the arrival of the 17.31 from Oxford. There will be a folk band playing and the CLPG are providing a cake.

In addition, children from the village school and their teachers will be able to set off west on a train from Combe and return the same day, courtesy of special stops by HSTs arranged by FGW so that they can have a day out in Worcester, joining the 08.22 from London and returning on the 14.34 ex-Malvern. BR did something similar for the 50th anniversary in 1985.

Let's hope the wooden platform can handle that amount of people on it!  Will it make it to its centenary though I wonder...?

I attended the 50th anniversary. I'm fairly sure this took place on a Saturday as I travelled from Malvern to Combe in the morning, where a special stop was made. My one and only journey to Combe. The CLPG handed out a little certificate to passengers travelling that day which I have just found. Happy Birthday Combe.

Martin Loader dropped in at Combe this morning to photograph the station decorated for its birthday and the 08.22 making its special stop to pick up the school party for their trip to Worcester. Pictures at http://www.hondawanderer.com/Recent_Additions.htm

Couple of reports from a certain local publishing house about the anniversary, a news story on the celebrations and a piece written by a colleague who was one of the handful of regular commuters for many years:

Few more pictures on the CLPG site now, including proof of just how many people you can fit on that platform...
