Title: 15:08 Weymouth to Gloucester due 18:32
Post by: James158 on June 11, 2010, 17:58:38
This service departed Weymouth 29 mins late at 15:37 due to the late running of this service down to Weymouth.

14:08 arrival at Weymouth from Gloucester arrived 14:53 due to having to wait at Yeovil Pen Mill for 30 mins to wait for the 13:10 Weymouth to Gloucester to come off the single line.

I don't understand why the 15:08 departed Weymouth 29 mins late as it arrived at Weymouth in enough time to depart on time.

UPDATE from FGW Website:-

15:08 Weymouth to Gloucester due 18:32
This train will be terminated at Bristol Temple Meads.

It will no longer call at: Filton Abbey Wood, Bristol Parkway, Yate, Cam & Dursley and Gloucester.

This is due to safety checks having been made earlier.

The service departed late, because the crew required a break that had to be a set amount of time.

I understand the crew, and the train were physically in the right place at the right time, but the rules regarding rest time meant they weren't allowed to take it out.

Hi Luke

Thanks for letting me know why the train left late. I thought it might be something to do with the train crew taking a break, now I know for sure. I don't blame them either (especially if the train is delayed).

Do you know what the set amount of time is for rest time?

Thanks

Apparently is about an hour!

What annoys me - even when they know about this, they are not honest with the reason and do not give the passengers a realistic time frame

The legal requirement is for a minimum 30 minute break (PNB) to be taken after the first 2.5 hours (I think!) and by the 7th hour of work. You may, depending on company/local agreements, have to factor in walking time to get from/to the train to somewhere the break can be taken (eg with cooking and hand washing facilities).

PNBs can be a bit of a contentious issue but they're a legal requirement and both company and traincrew can be liable if they're not rostered and/or taken correctly.

Standard regulations apply in a modified form to rail workers, but the site that I found does not go into details of the modifications:

I couldn't find a better link - anyone know one?

An empty bottle can be refilled - poetic justice?   Take particular care of iced tea bottles, as the refilled contents may be mistaken for the original ones until first taste.

When you gotta go.......! TBH Paddington to Hereford is what 3.5 hours? That would be pretty easy to do in one go plus there's a couple of stops on that trip where you could find somewhere if necessary.

Seriously you learn to not drink too much, pace yourself and go whenever you can. Quite a few drivers will carry something for emergencies (latex gloves are quite useful as long as you've a window to throw the evidence out of).
