Title: Northern Rail franchise extended Post by: Chris from Nailsea on May 13, 2010, 19:56:34 From the BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8680212.stm):
Quote Northern Rail is to continue to run services across the north of England for another three years, the Department for Transport has confirmed. The operator was awarded a two-year extension to its franchise, due to run out in September 2011, after meeting operational performance targets. Owned by a joint venture of Serco and Abellio, it runs 2,500 daily services. Since taking over in 2004, Northern Rail has increased passenger numbers and reduced cancellations. Punctuality has been boosted from 83.7% in the 12 months to December 2004 to 91.6% in the past 12 months. Ian Bevan, Managing Director, Northern Rail said: "We are delighted that the improvements we have made to the punctuality and reliability of our services have been recognised. We've worked hard to turn this franchise from the 'steady state' it was predicted to be into the thriving railway that it is today. We look forward to delivering even more for our passengers over the next three years."
