Title: 07:40 Paignton-Paddington 23/03

07:40 Paignton to London Paddington due 11:38

This train will be formed of 2 coaches instead of 8 between Paignton and Bristol Temple Meads. This is due to an earlier train fault.

That's gotta be interesting - sounds like it might be a tight squeeze/standing room only as it calls at Torquay, Newton Abbot, Teignmouth, Dawlish, Exeter St David's and Taunton before going on to Bristol!

Would they really run an HST set with two carriages?

It'll be a unit of some flavour, 142 or 150

Good luck!!

Oh I'm not taking it. I was just looking to see if my train from Acton to Paddington was running (& it is cos I've just got off it!) and came across that on the FGW website so thought I'd ask about it. So I'm guessing the HST set would take over at BTM?

I think I've found where they've got the unit from ...

It used to empty out at Newton Abbot as people with to a faster XC service. Cramped until then though.

Not the first time this has happened, and always good to see the faces of those on platform 5 when a 2 car 142 rolls in with London Paddington on the front... Good old 142s save the day  ;D

Do they really have "London Paddington" installed on the destination blinds?!

Believe 1A12 PGN - PAD is one of the first HSTs to be cancelled in the event of shortage of HSTs at Laira as its not that important as it takes a year to get to London on it. However, after Bristol it is normally rammed.

No problem, easy mistake to make.

For interests sake, it was a 2 car 143 that worked this today.

So was it just a Pacer between Paignton and BTM (with an HST doing the rest of the run?) I can't imagine anyone wanting to sit on a Pacer for an entire journey to London! Never been on a Pacer myself, but saw a report on ITV Westcountry on them once when they were being used on the Tarka line!

Last year I saw an SWT 159 leaving Westbury with "Belfast via Stranraer" showing - oh, to have had my camera with me !

Paddington can indeed be displayed on certain 142 blinds.

Never been on a Pacer myself.

Tis a strange experience, based on a lorry chassis with a single wheel at each corner - I think bend greasers were invented for Pacers as the wheels always face the same direction regardless of where the train is going.

However they don't ride like a lorry or a train or any other mode of transport - more like a horse or a donkey after which they are named - most upsetting to the brain to ride on a flat truck on flat rails only to be pitched forward and back as if on a bucking bronco - the only relief is the uninterrupted panoramic view over the top of low backed bus seats.

First time I used one I was trapped on it as I couldn't find the door open button - it's hidden on the blind side to the passengers.
