Title: Slough station to get ^2.5m upgrade for disabled access Post by: Chris from Nailsea on March 18, 2010, 17:43:01 From the BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/berkshire/8574210.stm):
Quote Slough railway station is to receive a ^2.5m upgrade to give disabled people better access for the 2012 Olympics. Wembley and Hackney stations will also get funding to make them "step-free" by the time the Games start in London. Thousands of spectators are expected to travel through Slough on their way to boating events at Eton Dorney Lake. Work on all three stations is due to start in 2011 and be completed by 2012, in time for the Olympic Games opening ceremony. Transport minister Chris Mole said: "Travellers will continue to benefit from better access at these stations for many years after the Olympics." The edge of the platform won't last long.

The edge of the platform won't last long. Not sure if that is serious question - but if it is, 'step free access' is only to the platform. Thameslink Core stations may get something more like level access to the train if all goes as planned due to the short dwell times, but that will be with dedicated stock. The main reason for the story seems to be that someone involved in planning the Access for All programme (listed on DfT's site) forgot about these stations and their relevance to the Olympics. Alternatively it was a shrewd move and they gambled on the LOCOG stepping in at the last minute... http://www.dft.gov.uk/transportforyou/access/rail/railstations/access/accessforallstations (http://www.dft.gov.uk/transportforyou/access/rail/railstations/access/accessforallstations) Paul This page is printed from the "Coffee Shop" forum at http://gwr.passenger.chat which is provided by a customer of Great Western Railway.
