Title: Passenger taken ill at Paddington, and other incidents causing delays - 3 March 2010
Post by: James Vertigan on March 03, 2010, 18:16:09
Posting this here as its affecting more than one service out of Paddington:

Quote
Train services have been disrupted due to a passenger being taken ill at London Paddington.Delays of up to 30 minutes may still occur.

Several platforms were unavailable during the incident which has resulted in ongoing delays on train services both into and out of London Paddington station.

The Greenford train I have just arrived home was late leaving Paddington and crawled its way to Acton Main Line, even HSTs were crawling through - no information was available to our driver (1718 out of Paddington) between Paddington and Acton (one passenger suggested someone had jumped in front of a train at Ealing Broadway - obviously a seasoned FGW traveller!)

It turns out that the real reason is as posted above - but I can't say I saw anything relating to the problem at Paddington, don't know which platforms were "unavailable".

I was on a train an hour later (18.18).. there was no information but we also left late and crawled as far as about Ealing Broadway before speeding up...Not sure if it's related..

According to the live FGW site (http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/LiveUpdateList.aspx), various trains leaving Paddington were delayed or even cancelled due to 'a passenger being taken ill earlier'.

One person on Twitter reported a 'broken rail outside Paddington' about three hours ago as well - don't know how accurate that report is!

An earlier Oxford service was stoned and delayed at Slough whilst the broken window was knocked out. Ended up 25 late on arrival.

"Several platforms were unavailable during the incident........"

I'm struggling to find a reason for several platforms being put out of use for someone being taken ill.  ???

Perhaps rather bizarrely - from FGW live updates (http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/LiveUpdateList.aspx):

Quote
19:27 Worcester Foregate Street to Oxford due 21:20
This train has been delayed at Worcester Shrub Hill and is now 25 minutes late. This is due to a passenger having been taken ill earlier.

It's totally unrelated I am sure but when I arrived at Paddington there were two very big posh cars and four police motorbikes waiting for someone to arrive.. Princess Anne maybe?

Almost certainly!

But of course they could not actually tell one that could they.

I remember when Charlie visited worcester - all parking was prohibited at shrub hill FFS.

The Duchess of Cornwall had engagements in the County yesterday, she could have stayed overnight and returned to London today.

Strange......

When he came to Warminster a while back - in the Royal Train, it was all fairly low key. They wouldn't let anyone up by the booking office, but when he left (heading Westbury way) I was stood on the platform just past the footbridge and nobody seemed to mind.
I suppose it all depends on the Plod in charge !

So the broken rail would explain trains crawling out of Paddington (assuming that is down.. I'm not sure of my downs and my ups but I do know I was on the main line  ;D)  an hour after the passenger taken ill incident? it would have been nice to have been told..

Yes, that's right. "Down" generally refers to trains travelling away from London, "up" trains are heading towards London. So an "Up Swansea" is travelling Swansea to Paddington but a "Down Swansea" is heading from Paddington to Swansea.

And if you're travelling from Oxford to Winchester then the 'up' service you're on turns into a 'down' service en-route.  ???

The waters are further muddied because back in the day the Midland Railway used Derby, not London, as the "datum" against which "up" or "down" was measured...so for example Bath to Mangotsfield was up, despite it going away from the big smoke!

I'm struggling to find a reason for several platforms being put out of use for someone being taken ill.  ???

Pass-com pulled whilst train is departing.  Trains stops on top of points?

I think that was only true of the Derby - Birmingham - Bristol part of the Midland - the rest of it worked from London. You can see milepost 0 for the Bristol line at the end of the platforms at Derby.

Pretty much, when the pass-com was pulled the front power car and a coach and a bit were already out of the platform, not only did someone collapse on the train, but almost at same time someone collapsed on the platform.
