Title: Where and when - a bit different
Post by: super tm on February 04, 2010, 16:20:00
We have quite a few photo where and when questions on here I thought I would do something a bit different.  See if you can tell where and when this article was published:-

BR is to take sterner measures to combat fraudulent travel by season ticket holders because some season ticket holders travel first class  on a second class ticket and pay the proper fare only when challenged.

From ****** passengers holding second-class season tickets travelling in a first class compartment will be excessed, not the difference between first and second class fares as at present but the full first class ordinary fare.

The fact that second-class compartments are sometimes full will not be accepted as a valid excuse for travelling first-class with a second-class ticket.

It will still be possible for the holder of a second-class season ticket to travel first-class by payment of the difference in fare before the journey.

So when did this take place and for a bonus point where did I read this article (And if you get the second part I will be amazed !)

Must have been before second class became standard class which, I think, was 1987?

If it was pre 1987 then possibly Thames Valley as the fast communter trains were still loco hauled with Mark 2s so although 2nd was good first was excellent.

Can't see it being the stopper 117s were 117s whether First or 2nd.

Reminds of anomoly which I  think got to court "Up North" (Calder Valley?) where a service was advertised as second class  only, presumably 14Xs, but quite often 15Xs would turn up with first class so everyone piled into First. Not sure if it was end of BR or first of TOCS, but whoever tried to excess the and it got to court. I think the court found in favour of the operator.

Are you sure that is right.  It was my understanding that if the service was advertised as SC only, then regardless of the stock that turns up, there is no FC and SC ticket holders can sit anywhere.

Tim I'm pretty sure the that something like it occurred but can't remember how long ago and whether it was BR or a TOC.

Senior moment.

Pretty sure it was ariound Leeds, because it was at the time Leeds commuting was growing and there were lots of complaints of overcrowding so probably a TOC.

Maybe wrong about court respose.
