http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xb7vys_londons-termini-in-the-swinging-60s_auto I hope they had PTS and a T2 when they took the shots at Paddington and by the way I'm not one of the spotters at the end of Plat 10 at KX (or at least I don't think so :D). Enjoy the music :D :D :D By the way it's about 20 minutes long ::) Title: Re: London Stations in the 1960s Post by: caliwag on January 19, 2010, 20:17:41 That is fantastic...could do with 20000 minutes of that! ;D

Title: Re: London Stations in the 1960s Post by: devon_metro on January 19, 2010, 21:52:09 Absolutely fascinating :)
Shows how much our railways have changed. Particularly love the clips with trains coming in with all the doors open and passengers walking alongside the moving train. Ah, how H&S has ruined us! ;) Title: Re: London Stations in the 1960s Post by: johoare on January 19, 2010, 22:10:08 I loved the clips too.. thank you.... If anyone has anymore I'd love to see them.. And yes I too particularly liked the slam door trains.. especially the one that arrived when the platform was still full (yet no one on the platform was knocked over by the opening doors!)... Getting off a train was so much easier then, if not a lot riskier :)
Title: Re: London Stations in the 1960s Post by: moonrakerz on January 19, 2010, 23:12:27 Enjoy the music :D :D :D I did - almost as good as the movie ! Title: Re: London Stations in the 1960s Post by: eightf48544 on January 19, 2010, 23:23:00 Yep and the slam door train arriving on the crowded platform was a Clacton (309). One of the best EMUs built grossley overpowered especialy as 10 car.
Train would be doing 60 at the end of the paltform after a stop. Timed at averages of around 66 mph over relatively short distances 10-12 miles. Did all those MNs and WCs slip leaving Waterloo or was it my imagination. Plus was that a baby Deltic as well in KX. Had one run behind one to Cambridge. Also Night Ferry arrivng at Victoria. Title: Re: London Stations in the 1960s Post by: JayMac on January 20, 2010, 00:02:08 Fantastic!! Warships and Westerns at Paddington....wish I was older so I could've experienced them in service. Rare colour footage of the Blue Pullman DEMU as well.
Oh.....and the building work at King's Cross/St Pancras never ends does it! Title: Re: London Stations in the 1960s Post by: JayMac on January 20, 2010, 00:10:48 Anyone know what that unit was pulling into Liverpool St? Looked like a forerunner to the Wessex Electric 442 with its wraparound cab windows!

In pt2 of the rail blue vid I love the radio ad at 03:35. Some might say, very appropriate for the subject matter! I re-read eightf's post and went a-trawling the internet for info on 1960s a/c EMU's. I wonder what delightful fare the 'griddle cars' cooked up?
Title: Re: London Stations in the 1960s Post by: Btline on January 20, 2010, 14:45:37 Funny how common sense and responsibility have disappeared now!
Just shows how station dwell times are higher now with electric doors - most passengers were of before the train stopped! Title: Re: London Stations in the 1960s Post by: Brucey on January 20, 2010, 15:17:11 The videos on this site also provide a very interesting watch: http://www.screenonline.org.uk/film/id/445275/index.html
I believe you may need a subscription to access them (I'm using a VPN from a university that has a subscription). I particularly think that "The Finishing Line" from 1977 should still be shown in schools. A nice way of persuading kids that they shouldn't trespass on the railway. Title: Re: London Stations in the 1960s Post by: JayMac on January 20, 2010, 15:48:41 You're right Brucey, those vids are only available for academic access. However a bit of cross-referencing of the title on youtube brings up "The Finishing Line". There is also one I remember from my schooldays: 'Robbie' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lx67rr8B7dk&feature=fvw).
At primary school I remember we were all sat down in the school hall to watch Robbie's story (which coincidentally includes some of the footage from the earlier posted vids). Scared us witless as kids! Title: Re: London Stations in the 1960s Post by: eightf48544 on January 20, 2010, 22:12:08 Thanks d_m. I re-read eightf's post and went a-trawling the internet for info on 1960s a/c EMU's. I wonder what delightful fare the 'griddle cars' cooked up? Remember it well I had a girl friend in Braintree at the time, one advantage of being a railwayman you could have girlfriends all over the place and visit them cheaply! So my trips to Braintree were mostly to sample the grilled steak the Griddle Car produced. A real piece of steal cooked to order served in I some form of bap (which I think were new in the South at the time). Delicious. Plus the superb runs to Witham on the 309s. Braintree branch was still DMU. I have a b/w picture somewhere taken in one of intermediate cabs of the speedo rock steady on 90. What more could a young lad want? Title: Re: London Stations in the 1960s Post by: Electric train on January 20, 2010, 22:24:25 The thing that fascinated me was how light and airy Paddington seemed to be compared to today, it will be so good when the 4th arch opened out again
Title: Re: London Stations in the 1960s Post by: amiddl on January 20, 2010, 22:26:07 Watched Marylebone in the 1960's tonight from same source. Interestingly a big chunk of it is trains on diversion from Paddington - worth a look
